FW South Side at FW Northrop
Final Score: South Side 80 – Northrop 85
High scoring game with high speed pace of play. The first quarter was no indicator of how the game was really going to be as South Side lead 17-14. Cortney Shorter helped South Side out to the early lead with his length and outside shooting. The #9 seeded Archers were looking to take down the #8 seeded Bruins finishing the half up 36-35 behind the outside shooting from junior sharp-shooter Trejean Didier who was comfortable shooting from anywhere and everywhere.
Richard Robertson and the Bruins came out with a vengeance in the second half. Robertson was attacking the basket on offense and creating opportunities for the entire team. Ta’Von Johnson had the play of the game with a put-back dunk in the 3rd quarter over two Archer defenders. Northrop won the third quarter 23-22 and tied the game up at 58 heading into the fourth.
The 4th was much like the 3rd. Northrop dominated the game with their aggressiveness on the offensive end and Robertson finished the game with 35 points (also shooting 19 FT’s). Northrop pulled the game out 85-80 behind the efforts of Robertson, Johnson, and Royal off the bench. Northrop’s bench outscored South Side’s bench 19-8 which was a big reason for the opening round win.
#8 Northrop advances out of the first round to face #1 North Side tomorrow @ 12:30 p.m. at Wayne High School in the second game of the second round of the SAC Tournament.
FW Concordia at FW Wayne
Final Score: Wayne 68 – Concordia 56
In the second game of the opening round at Wayne High School, #7 Wayne faced off with #10 Concordia. With a little home court advantage, Wayne dominated the entire game from start to finish. Sophomore guard Demarea Dial and junior guard Darien Causey both came out aggressively looking for their offense and put the Generals up 18-14 after the first quarter. It was much of the same from Causey in the second quarter and the Generals were up 40-29 at the half.
Coming out in the 3rd quarter, Concordia put on a little run of their own behind sophomore PG Jadon Dance, sophomore SG Adam Gottschalk, and senior forward Larson Ashford to bring the game within 4 points mid-3rd quarter. Wayne answered right back and stretched the lead to 11 entering the 4th quarter, 54-43.
The lead proved to be too much for the Cadets to overcome as the young team turned the ball over on some key possessions in the fourth quarter. Craig Young sealed the deal with a zone-busting dunk in the final quarter and Wayne took the game 68-56 on their home court to knock Concordia out. The Generals outrebounded the Cadets 37-23 which helped them hold their lead.
#7 Wayne advances out of the first round to face #2 Homestead tomorrow @ 5:45 p.m. at Wayne High School in the final game of the second-round action of the SAC Tournament.
FW Bishop Luers at FW Carroll
Final Score: Bishop Luers 59 – Carroll 52
Carroll came out of the gate with the right game plan, sit back in a gap zone and get Luers in foul trouble. Carroll’s zone had Luers offense stagnant and slow in the first half and Carroll was up 18-10 after the first quarter. Anton Berry of Luers was on the bench with two fouls and things seemed to be going the Chargers way. They completed the first half executing the game plan and took a 30-20 lead into the half behind a good effort from Anthony Martin and Jared Hofer.
Coming out in the second half, Ray Walker had a different attitude that helped Luers get back into the game. Walker was all over Carroll’s ball handlers and in passing lanes, he finished with 7 steals that helped Luers get the game into a quicker, up and down pace. JJ Foster finally got a few shots to drop and Anton Berry was back to being aggressive after sitting in the first half. Luers won the third quarter 19-6 and took a 39-36 lead into the final quarter.
Carroll couldn’t overcome the deficit as Luers was clutch from the free throw line at the end of the game. Despite having three players in double figures, Carroll just didn’t have the offense to come back in the final quarter. Luers took the game 59-52, wining the second half 39-20. This was a tale of two halves for both teams.
#5 Bishop Luers advances out of the second round to face the winner of #1 North Side and #8 Northrop Wednesday @ 6:30 p.m. at Wayne High School in the semi-finals of the SAC Tournament.
