We saw a ton of 2017, 2018, and 2019 prospect and there were more than a few to write about. We sit back, review our notes, and give you a look at some of those guys. Here, we look at the best of the best from the class of 2017.
Ollie Pettit – 6’1 | SG | 2017 – Covington
Ollie is a tall guard that has solid touch on his jumper from the mid-range and beyond. He also had a few drives to the rim where he was able to slide past defenders without fouling. He’s got that deceptiveness that really gives him options on offense. Really like him off the ball but capable of helping from time to time.
Josh Dieball – 6’3 | SG | 2017 – Linton-Stockton
Really liked the way Dieball went about the game, using his size and skill to make the plays rather than sheer aggressiveness. He had a ton of really nice passes into the paint, ones that set up easy points. His focus today was more as a point guard and while he doesn’t bring a ton of speed or shooting, he was calm and under control. He did show he could score, going off the bounce, but was a secondary option for him. Feel much better about his as a combo guard at the next level.
Bryanth Farr – 6’6 | C | 2017 – Beloit Memorial (WI)
Farr is a thick, low post threat who has solid mobility for a player his size. When he can have time to catch on the low block, that mobility comes into play as defenders struggle to stop him from getting off a shot. Farr is a true back-to-the-basket post. Most of his touches will come on the low block where he can move pretty well but doesn’t have that explosiveness to rise and finish. Big bodied post who could make a living in the low post at the next level with a little refining.
Anthony Johnson – 6’6 | SF | 2017 – Beloit Memorial (WI)
Johnson is an athletic forward who plays primarily in the mid-range and in. He loves to face-up at 15′ and make a play, whether that is running down rebounds or a one-dribble attack off the bounce. He uses his physicality of which he has tons, to create a shot. He has a great frame with loads of strength. The one knock is he lacks explosiveness on his jump and needs a little bit of a start to make a play above the rim.
Jequan Pegeese – 5’9 | PG | 2017 – Beloit Memorial (WI)
Pegeese is a lightning quick guard with a trigger that is just as fast. He loves to pull up from distance and well beyond. He’s on the smaller end so he uses the distance and a solid jumping ability to create the space to get off his shot. He missed his first four three pointers but then came back to make three straight. Would like to see how he does taking less shots but he can make them. On defense, his speed really can make life difficult. He had a few turnovers that he created near the midcourt line.
Jason Slain – 6’5 | PF | 2017 – Fishers
Slain has done a good job in the last year of turning himself into more of a faced up player. He’s now making more and more plays away from the basket and even on defense. He had a few of those defensive plays this game where he got some steals and scoring on one of them near the end of the first half. He’s still got to find his groove on the offensive end but if he can continue this move and get more points off of trash plays and play to the workhorse mentality, that could really help his stock.
Joe Counts – 6’7 | PF | 2017 – Fishers
Following the game earlier this week, it was good to see Counts making some shots. He had his touch going in the middle of the game and gave Fishers some life right out of halftime. He hit a pair of threes and then did some work in the mid-range. He’s got the capability to shoot the ball but the streakiness is what hurts. Want to see more consistency and play like he did against Beloit Memorial.
Jaylen Butz – 6’9 | PF | 2017 – Fort Wayne North
This was the performance you have been looking for from Jaylen for a while now. Best game to date for our viewing. He was stellar in and around the rim although Cathedral had no size. He did exactly what he should have as a big man against smaller wing/guards, he kept the ball high, no dribbles, and quick strikes. He made his first 7 shots from the field and all came right at the rim. He later showed a little floater and a turnaournd hook. He still won’t be a guy that tracks and runs down boards but when they fall to him like they did on Saturday he was able to grab 12 of them.
Davontae Kinnie – 5’9 | PG | 2017 – Fort Wayne North
Kinnie wasn’t great early on coming off the bench but he really turned it up in the second half. He finished with 12 points, 2 rebounds, and a few steals and assists. He showed his toughness a few times as he initiated contact near the rim and forced Cathedral to foul him. Kinnie still has to show more consistency but when it comes to pure toughness, he is one of the best from the guard spot in the state.
Landon Hall – 6’4 | SF | 2017 – Brownsburg
Hall was very clearly sick and didn’t have the explosiveness or quickness that you have seen from him before. However, you have to be impressed with a guy that looked like he should have been in bed, but instead he scored 18 points on 9/10 shooting. Everything was at the rim and the three shots that were jumpers and his free throws he missed all of but the toughness to fight and make plays at the rim really stood out.
