Obviously, it can make it quite difficult for rankings. However, as a sports fan, the parity makes it a lot more fun. At this point, there are a couple of clear cut favorites. With that said, the field appears to be fairly open and everyone needs to bring their “A” game as region play begins.
6A Rankings
Corona Del Sol – Corona had a huge week last week at Hoophall West as they knocked off some of the top teams in the nation. In addition, Corona has had a strong in state start as they are one of two undefeated teams remaining and have wins over Mesa Mountain View and Cesar Chavez. It will be interesting to watch one of the top teams in 5A, Apollo, take on this 6A powerhouse. Corona Del Sol is led largely by the best backcourt in the entire state with Saban Lee and Alex Barcello. As these two talented guards go, as does Corona Del Sol.
Basha – Many people have Basha as the number one team in the state and in the 6A Rankings, which is understandable as they are undefeated as well and have plenty of talent. Like Corona, Basha won two games at Hoophall West and have been playing solid basketball. Basha is led by a stingy defense and Gabe McGlothan as well as Terrell Brown. Like every 6A team, the end of the season is filled with a number of quality games in which they will have the opportunity to show their ability to be the top team in the 6A Rankings.
Desert Vista – Everyone knows that Desert Vista has plenty of talent. In fact, I think they have the most depth out of any team in 6A. Their early season schedule has not been as rigorous as many of the other teams. However, that changes very soon as they have one of the, if not the, toughest regions in 6A. For Desert Vista to be successful in a region where all the teams are capable, talent wise, of making a run to make state, they must get contributions from their key players. Specifically, look for Wesley Harris, Noah Bauman, Steele Bennett, and Christian Anigwe. Also, Alijah Gammage, a transfer from Chandler Christian, has been a huge help off of the bench.
Pinnacle – Many wondered how the young, but talented team would fair early in the season. The answer: just fine. Although they have had a couple of stumbles, the talented guard play mixed with the all around depth has made this team difficult to compete against. Mason Johnson has played well as one of the only upperclassmen who has earned significant playing time on this young team. In addition to Johnson, the underclassmen trio of Nico Mannion, Trent Brown, and Spencer Rattler has demonstrated why many believe this to be the strongest group of underclassmen in the state. Mannion is also asserting that is truly one of the best players in the entire state despite only being a freshman. This team has the potential to be special this season and for years to come.
Mountain View – An early and close loss to Corona Del Sol demonstrated right from the get go that one of the state’s top teams historically was still going to be competing at a high level this year. The group continues its trend of past years with tough defense and smart decision making. In fact, in their loss to Corona Del Sol, they shot the basketball uncharacteristically poor from the foul line. This has not and most likely will not be a trend for this team. They have a good group of players who play this game at an extremely high level. Look for Nick Sessions to be the primary leader for this team.
