Both of these teams are considered to be top contenders for the state title. This should be a fun game that features many players who will be playing this game at the next level.
Chaparral High School
Chaparral is one of the deepest teams in the state and they are led by star point guard Colten Kresl. After a strong club ball season, many fans were eagerly awaiting the opportunity to see what Kresl would bring back to his high school team. So far, he has not disappointed as he has averaged almost 22 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Although he is the leader of the team, they have many other options that play key roles to the teams success. JT Thoman brings a toughness and physical style of play that compliments Kresl nicely and makes this backcourt skilled and aggressive. Moreover, look for sharp shooter Jalen Foster to continue to fill it up as he is shooting the basketball at over a 44% clip for the 3 point line. Lastly, big man Kai Fletcher is active and strong. He has good footwork on the block and plays his role well for this team. He is all over the glass, sets good screens, and does whatever he can to impact the game. This should be a fun battle of styles as Chaparral is going to get the basketball up the floor quickly and has plenty of talented players who can fill up the bucket. Their counterpart, Sunnyslope, will hope to play tough half court defense that will stifle these talent players.
Sunnyslope High School
Sunnyslope figure to be one of the state’s best teams as they return the majority of their team from last year. Although almost everyone saw them having a lot of success, it is safe to say that they have still wowed people in their 9-0 efforts. Not only have they managed to be undefeated at this point, but they have only had two games that were within 20 points in those nine games. Two of the nine games were against last years D2 runner up and a couple of the games were against teams that many believe have a chance at making the state tournament. This team is special as it is quite apparent that they enjoy playing for each other. They are always in good defensive position, they fly on the movement of the basketball, and they battle on the glass while having limited turnovers on the offensive end. Their efficiency as a team is through the roof. One of the biggest keys to this team’s success has been the strong play of G/F Kyle Fischer. Fischer’s versatility sets him apart as he is a talented guard with a good shot, handle, and basketball IQ who is more than capable of guarding multiple positions and getting after it on the glass. In addition to Fischer, the strong guard play of Bryson Mewhinney and Abayev Allen has aided them greatly in their early season success. Lastly, the big man in the middle, Chris Orozco, has been pivotal to the team’s success as he is very effective on the block and from the mid-range area.
