Best of the Best
Shadow Mountain – Shadow Mountain recently beat their rival, who is currently ranked in the 5A rankings, by 52 points. In addition to this solid victory, Shadow Mountain took down Pinnacle in their most recent game. Shadow Mountain might not just be the best team in 4A; rather, the best team in the entire state. They have a trio of guards who appear to be unstoppable and some talented role players. As the season progresses, continue to watch Jaelen House, Jovan Blacksher, Marcus Shaver, Darion Spottsville, Tyler Jafery, and Jordan Pace.
Best of the Rest
Salpointe Catholic – Salpointe has had some statement wins already despite it being relatively early in the season. For that reason, they earn the #2 spot in the 4A Rankings. In addition, this team is the best in all of Tucson. This group is well balanced and can hang with almost anyone in the state. The success of Salpointe largely hings upon the strong play of 2019 Majok Deng, 2017 Cameron Miller, and 2018 Rylan O’Brien.
St. Mary’s – So far so good for the talented St. Mary’s team as their only losses are to two out of state opponents in Mater Dei (CA) and Christ the King (NY). Other than that, St. Mary’s has started out the season strong and KJ Hymes has proven to be the player that many thought he was capable of being. If St. Mary’s is going to be able to knock off the talented foes of Shadow Mountain and Salpointe, Hymes will have to continue his tough play that has earned him 15 NCAA Division-1 scholarship offers.
Rio Rico – Led by deep and solid guard play, Rio Rico is well deserving of their 4A Ranking. In order for Rio Rico to continue their top tier play, their guards will need to continue to play lights out as there is plenty of talent in 4A. As it currently stands, Martin Ochoa is leading the way with 12 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals per game. Moreover, the rest of the group has not been too shabby. Keep an eye on Luis Quezada, German Arana, and Alex Arizpe.
Flagstaff – Despite losing their long time head coach and some talented prospects, Flagstaff still appears to be operating at an extremely high level. Their strong start is due in large part to the fundamental play of this strong group. Specifically, the group goes as Brandon Tiffany goes. He is a talented point guard who manages the game well. Flagstaff should continue their good start as they enter region play and maintain their spot in the 4A Rankings.
