The Longhorns were supposed to be in a rebuilding season after losing eight seniors from a team that advanced to the Class 4 state quarterfinals. However, Parkway West has rebuilt around the talents of 6’8″ senior Wyatt Yess and kept it moving. They improved to 6-1 with a 60-49 victory over St. Charles, knocking the Pirates from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Here is a look at the 10 Best:
MVP: Wyatt Yess (Parkway West) – The 6’8″ Yale commit scored 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds and pretty much controlled the game at both ends of the court. Yess is a fundamentally sound player who makes everyone around him better, which is a big reason why the Longhorns have been able to continue winning despite losing eight seniors to graduation.
Best Offensive Player: Nate Hughes (Parkway West) – The 5’11” senior guard came up big with 17 points to support Yess. Hughes did a nice job of getting buckets from everywhere. He knocked down a couple of 3-pointers, scored in transition and moved well without the basketball.
Best Shooter: Drew Cannon (St. Charles) – The 6’2″ senior sharpshooter scored 16 points and knocked down four 3-pointers for the Pirates. He even knocked down a couple of the dribble.
Best Defensive Player: Adrian Scott (Parkway West): The 5’9″ junior guard came off the bench and was a real nuisance on the defensive end. He had three steals and did a nice job of guarding St. Charles sophomore standout Cameron Teson.
Best Young Prospect (2019, 2020) – Cameron Teson (St. Charles) – The younger brother of former St. Charles standout Casey Teson, Cameron scored 13 points. He is a feisty point guard with slick ball handling skills and 3-point range.
Best Bench Player: Adrian Scott (Parkway West): The aforementioned Scott not only was a sparkplug on defense for the Longhorns, but he also contributed seven points to the victory.
Biggest Moment of the Game: St. Charles was on a run when they cut a 12-point Parkway West lead to six points midway through the fourth quarter. Just when the Longhorns appeared to be rattled, freshman guard Kyle Geraghty nailed a corner 3-pointer to push the lead back up to nine points to restore order. It was his only field goal attempt of the game, but it was a big one.
Play of the Game: In the second quarter, Wyatt Yess caught the ball on the right wing, he ripped through and drove down the middle and threw down an impressive one-handed slam dunk in traffic.
