Continue ReadingIt was a close game at halftime but a full court press followed by a slew of turnovers really turned this game around. Twin Lakes pulled away in the second half for a 65-45 victory over Frankfort in the first game of the J&C Hoops Classic on Monday night.
Carter Taylor of Frankfort led all scorers with 24 points to go along with 13 rebounds. Senior guard Matt Conrad scored 17 points to lead Twin Lakes in scoring. Kris Goodlow also chipped in 13 points for Twin Lakes.
MVP: Matt Conrad (Twin Lakes)
Conrad gets the nod over Taylor because Twin Lakes got the win but those two guys were really good in this game. Matt gave the Indians all they needed. He seemed to be in most big plays and did a good job to lead them in the second half when they were pulling away. Matt ended with 17 points on 6/10 shooting and had 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 5 steals.
Play of the Game: Matt Conrad (Twin Lakes)
The play of the game is a pretty insignificant one on it’s surface but was really the nail in the coffin for Frankfort. At the end of the third quarter, Twin Lakes already had a sizable lead and dribbled out the clock before Matt Conrad hit a three at the buzzer. That made it 51-34. It was more iconic than anything as Twin Lakes, in the second half, was able to make every play they needed to.
Best Offensive Performance: Carter Taylor (Frankfort)
The best player on the court was Carter Taylor. He was unstoppable the entire game. The problem was getting the ball to him on every possession. Turnovers dictated this outcome but Taylor was still pretty impressive. His shooting touch was on and he went for 24 points on 11/16 shooting. He showed a nice face-up game in the mid-range as well.
Best Defensive Performance: Justin Crabb (Twin Lakes)
The best defensive performance goes to Crabb who led Twin Lakes in their attacking press last night. Justin had 7 steals in the game. Frankfort was turning the ball over at a high rate gathering 21 total turnovers. Crabb and Conrad were at the head of the press most of the time and were the biggest benefactors.
Best Guy Off The Bench: Joel Quasebarth (Twin Lakes)
Quasebarth was really good off the bench. Twin Lakes didn’t need him to go 5/5 from the field but it was the icing on the cake. He gave them a guy that didn’t have to shoot threes or get to the rim which is a lot of what this team does. Joel had a couple mid-range jumpers as well as a nice floater to cap things off.
Best Intangibles: Bryce Bennington (Twin Lakes)
The guy who who should you the most was Bryce Bennington. He wasn’t his best by any means but he gave you so many different areas on Monday night that he could get away with only four points on three shots. He had 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. He was more of a facilitator for the offense rather than the attacking guard we have seen in the past. His toughness and willingness to be unselfish in this game really helped.
Best Under-The-Radar Performance: Kris Goodlow (Twin Lakes)
With a trio of guards in the Bennington’s and Conrad, you didn’t go in thinking that the second leading scorer for Twin Lakes was going to be someone other than those three. However, Goodlow was really good and was the recipient of some nice setup work. He had a lot of points because of his physicality attacking the rim, drawing contact and continually finding the rim.
Best Underclassmen: Jayce Moore (Frankfort)
The best underclassmen of the day was Jayce Moore. The 6’2 guard is still a little young in his play, timid at times but the sophomore guard can really shoot it. He’s a rhythm guy but has the capability of contributing early this year.
Best Coaching Decision: Twin Lakes
The best decision in this game was for Twin Lakes to go to a full-court press to start and end the second half. They threw it at Frankfort in spurts in the first half and it was so effective, it was a bit surprising that they didn’t just do that the whole time. Going to it in the second half helped to rack up 21 turnovers and 27 points off of those turnovers. If Frankfort only turns the ball over as many times as Twin Lakes (10), this is probably a one or two possession game at the end not a 19-points blowout.
Best Storyline Moving Forward: The key moving forward for Frankfort is how do they find a guard or strategy to fight the turnovers. One player on their team had 10 turnovers alone but that was a lot due to him being the second guy in the press break and that was when Twin Lakes would squeeze. They have to put their players in better positions to succeed because they have enough on offense when in the halfcourt that they can be really good, they just have to get there.
