Best of the Best
Sunnyslope High School – As a team that many expect to win the 5A state title, it is safe to assume few are surprised by them winning the Sunnyslope Tournament. The group looks like they are picking up right where they left off from last year. 2018 Kyle Fischer won the tournament MVP, and rightfully so. This young man looks poised to have yet another huge season on this talented roster. He has grown in stature and skill to the point where he can play anywhere from the 1-3 in high school and probably a 2-3 in many college programs. In addition to Fischer, keep on eye on 2017 Chris Orozco and 2017 Bryce MeWhinney.
Runner Up
Agua Fria High School – Despite making it to the state championship last year, this was a surprise to many. There was a lot of uncertainty about this group heading into this season due to the number of talented prospects who graduated last year. However, 2018 prospects Duron McNeal, Daniel Foster, and 2017 Bryce Fowler did all that they could do erase any such concerns. The trio had a strong week in which they knocked off Ironwood, Liberty, Cathedral (TX), and fell short against Sunnyslope at the Sunnyslope tournament. Whether or not this team is a state contender is up in the air still. With that said, they did enough in this tournament for the state to take notice that they still have plenty of talent.
3rd Place
Sandra Day O’Connor High School – Led by talented 2019 Keaton Rodgers and 2018 TJ Connaker, this group was able to take third in the tournament . O’Connor made their way to 3rd place in the Sunnyslope tournament with wins over Bradshaw Mountain, Moon Valley, and Cathedral. In addition to the solid play of their underclassmen, they received solid contribution from another underclassmen in 2018 Chase Morley. This group has a lot of depth and young talent that should make for a solid season this year and in future years. Their guard play is stout and they have good length to go along with it. Keep an eye on this group as they should experience much more success than they have had in the last couple of seasons.
