Continue ReadingThe coming high school season is almost upon us. With that, we are taking a look at each Sectional in the state. Starting with 64 and ending with 1. Today, we are previewing Sectional 6 at Huntington North.
Teams: Fort Wayne South, Fort Wayne Wayne, Homestead, Huntington North, Jay County, Muncie Central
Last Season: This past year was pretty average for a solid Sectional 6. They had every team except Wayne with well over .500 record. In fact, five of the six teams had more than 15 wins. At the end of the year, Homestead proved that they could repeat even without their McDonald’s All-American Caleb Swanigan. It was a trio of juniors that helped get them through to Regionals. They ended up losing to state runner-up McCutcheon in the Regional Championship finishing the year 21-6.
Contenders For 2016-17: For this upcoming season, Homestead won’t be the kind of surprise it was last season. With guys like Jack Ferguson, Brandon Durnell, and Parker Manges as the core seniors, this should be one of the best teams to start the year and one of the best teams outside the Indianapolis area. The competition at the top will likely come from Huntington North and possibly Jay County. Huntington North loses Konnor Platt so they will need to find a replacement at the point but having Hunter Hollowell and Chazz Bruce will be helpful for the offense. Jay County is one of those teams that always seems to be able to compete year in, year out. They have four seniors that take some size with them. Fort Wayne Wayne only won 7 games last year but they should be much better building up a very young group. Muncie Central should be solid once again and have an outside chance to compete. Fort Wayne South is the team you don’t know much about. They bring back Trejean Didier but Austin Boucher has transferred out. Cortney Shorter should have a much bigger impact this year but it really depends on if they can get a third scoring threat to step up and help bring balance. Overall, Homestead should be the class of this Sectional but it shouldn’t be a runaway.
Players to Watch: The guy to watch is Jack Ferguson, the 6’2 senior from Homestead. It is likely that Homestead is going to repeat this year and it could be lead by Ferguson. He would end up being a surprise to most in the state as an unknown commodity but his offense is potent and he could be one of the best scoring threats in the state after averaging 13.8 points last season.
