Teams: Chesterton, Crown Point, Hobart, Merrillville, Michigan City, Portage, Valparaiso
Last Season: This was a really weird Sectional last season. You saw one of the best teams in 22-2 Merrillville lose in the first round of Sectionals. You saw Valparaiso make it to the Sectional Championship game and give Crown Point a run for their money. This coming after Crown Point started off the season horribly. In the end, it was Crown Point breaking through to the Regional Championship game and losing to Warsaw in a crazy low scoring affair, 33-46.
Contenders For 2016-17: Look for this season to be a little bit different than last with Hobart and Michigan City getting better at the bottom of the Sectional. Both return quite a bit of talent and have enough depth to compete better this year. Chesterton will likely fall this season with not much talent returning. Losing Niles Dilosa and Rhyss Lewis really hurt. However, Valparaiso, while losing some key pieces, could potentially be even better than last years 20-7 record. Crown Point loses four key seniors but their depth should hold them near the top. Also, Merrillville should be very good again. Maybe not 22-2 but they could have a chance to really compete state-wide and look to make a deep run in the tournament.
Players to Watch: The guy to watch is Sasha Stefanovic, the 6’4 two-guard from Crown Point. He’s supremely talented and if Crown Point is going to be as good as last season, they will need him to carry this team offensively. He has that capability but he has had some lulls from time to time. If he shows that consistency early, he’s so difficult to defend that teams will struggle to put Crown Point away in close games.
