Region 6 Preview
Region 6 in the 4A classification is headlined by the 4A defending state champs Olympus High School. Olympus ran away with the region 6 title last year with Murray and Kearns following in second and third respectively. This year will be no different with Olympus being the heavy favorite with the other six teams battling for playoff spots. Here is our predicted order of how Region 6 will finish.
-
- Olympus: The Titans Lost 8 seniors from last years state championship team, but this will not be a rebuilding season. 2nd team all-state guard Matt Lindsey will lead the charge along with transfer Rylan Jones, who is the #2 ranked 2019 prospect in Utah. Olympus should run away with the region title.
- Kearns: The Cougars have shown they are the most athletic team in the state and has had success with their up and down pace. Scoring guards Mike Hernandez and Nick Vallez will be a tough backcourt to stop.
- Hillcrest: After sneaking into the playoffs on the last day of the regular season last season, the Huskies are looking to make some noise in region 6 this season. Hillcrest returns 4 starters that is lead by Senior guard Stockton Ashby and Junior guard Bassel Tekharli.
- Murray: This past season was the best finish Murray has had in Region 6 with a 2nd place finish. The Spartans lose 5 starters including three players that are now playing at the college level. Murray will be looking for players from last year’s JV team to pick-up the load this season.
- Judge Memorial: The Bulldogs will look to be more competitive this season with former Weber State University assistant coach Tim Gardner taking the reigns as head coach. 6’6 Alan Lang will have to carry the load for the Bulldogs to battle for 4th place and the final playoff spot.
- Skyline: The eagles will have to find a way to replace big time scorer Austin Stevenson after he was lost due to graduation. Guard Nifai Tonga is their only double digit scorer that returns for Skyline.
- Cyprus: The Pirates has been the bottom dweller in Region 6 since the reclassification in 2014. They will need to find more consistent scoring to be more successful this season.
