But his real passion lies on the gridiron.
“I’m better at football, I’ve been getting better and better at football. I’m leading the state in rushing this season,” said Walker, whose Chargers are in the football playoffs still.
He’s got football offers in tow from Jackson State, Grambling State and Kentucky Christian. And higher level schools are starting to send mail.
“I have Colorado, Kansas, Lafayette, Houston, Tulane, Oklahoma,” said Walker.
His prowess on the hardwood is not lost on area hoops programs though, and he’s seen initial interest from at least three Louisiana D1s.
“I’ve been talking to Northwestern and Lafayette and that’s about it, and UNO too, mostly just letters.”
He’s still got plenty of time to figure everything out, but he did mention to PHLA that playing both sports in college would be something he could be interested in.
“If I end up going to a small school, I think I could maybe try and play both,” said Walker. “But if I end up going somewhere big, I’ll probably just focus on football.”
Though he’s undersized — particularly by basketball standards — Walker says that he’s a force of the defensive end, and he prides himself on being a true point guard.
“My strength is on the defensive end; I’m a lock-down defender and can guard anybody from a point guard to a small forward,” he said. “And I really like to just get my team involved, and get assists and just run the show.”
With the football team still playing, Walker will get a late start to his basketball season. But when he comes back, he’s looking forward to an increased role with the defending 2A state champs.
“My personal goal is to have more assists than I did last season, and to average at least 12 points per game. And then to just get another ring,” said Walker.
“Last year I was sixth-man coming off the bench. But this year I’ll be more of a scorer, and be more involved. And we’re looking to win another state championship.”
