Recruiting Report: Sterling Brown (2017)
One of the state’s most underrated point guards is from Carmel, Indiana and is looking to make an impact in his final year of high school ball. The 5’11 point guard is ranked 28th overall in our senior class in Indiana. Sterling Brown wants to make his stock rise this winter, as it should.
The lead guard is very savvy when it comes to leading a team. From knowing where his teammates will be, consistently hitting them for a shot or taking the ball off the dribble and pulling up into a clean jumper. These intangibles have caught the eyes of many programs but he only hold a lone offer.
Chicago State has pulled the trigger and offered and he has taken visits to Grand Valley State and Wabash College but as far as recruiting goes, this is all that has happened thus far. Expecting a breakout season we are sure that his interest will pick up throughout the winter. All the coaches that have contacted Brown have expressed his leadership being a quality that they like among others.
“I am very vocal on the court and I make my teammates better. I want the ball in my hands with the game on the line. They also like that I shoot the ball at a high rate.”
This summer running with Spiece Indy Heat 2017, Brown said that it was a great experience. They played on the EYBL circuit which put Brown in front of some of the best talent in the nation.
“After playing such tough competition it made me a much more complete player and helped my recruiting. I got some calls from Ivy League schools and even heard from Purdue and Michigan because of it.”
Even though Brown has been contacted by these schools, he knows that this does not mean they are going to eventually offer him so he worked a lot on his craft as a point guard and will continue to do so throughout the winter.
“I worked on a lot of ball handling and finishing around the rim. I have gotten so much more comfortable with my left hand. These are things that I will continue to improve.”
This upcoming year, the powerhouse Carmel High School will look to have another solid year and make a deep run into the tournament. Much of the success will ride squarely on the back of Brown and his leadership and playmaking.
“I feel I am the best guard in the state and I cannot wait to prove it. I think our team is going to succeed because we have been working hard and have a great system.”
Brown knows that in a few short months he is going to have to make a decision that will impact the rest of his life and he is looking to make the right decision.
“I think I am going to make an academic decision. That is one of the main reasons I am considering Wabash. For example I am number one on Cornell’s board. They play division one and have that academic aspect that I am looking for so it would be a nice balance.”
