Continue ReadingBelleville East 2018 Malachi Smith is a 6’3” shooting guard that had a strong summer with the Southwest Jets and has continued to see his stock on the rise into his junior season. Seems locked in early in the season on both ends of the floor. He is a smooth scorer that handles the rock in tight spaces getting to the hoop. Capable three point threat off the catch. Can even post up smaller guards on occasion. Potential to score at all three levels. Impressed with what he shows defensively getting in passing lanes, moving laterally, and having active hands. Potential low-major prospect that needs to be monitored at that level.
Smith spoke about his team at Belleville East.
“It is going good. We are working hard in practice. We have a really hard schedule this year so we are trying to be good as a team and play as a collective unit.”
He is learning beside one of the best seniors in the state in Illini commit Javon Pickett.
“Javon (Pickett) is leading the way. He is taking me under his wing and telling me where I am supposed to be. He is helping me in practice become a better player.”
Where does he feel his game grew this past summer with the Southwest Jets?
“Really my confidence in my shot. I feel like attacking the hole harder and finishing through contact. Also playing defense better.”
He updated us on his recruitment.
“I talk to North Dakota State every day. I am hearing from Lindenwood and Indiana State.”
North Dakota State has shown a particular strong interest in him.
“They are really intense. Every time I talk to them their coach says they are always practicing and lifting weights. They want me to come up for a visit so I plan on doing that this year.”
