Continue ReadingAn unknown gem is yet to be uncovered as Waldron has one of the better players in 1A. Despite being at one of the smallest 1A schools in the state, 6’4 Hank Johnson will put up huge stat lines throughout the year. Johnson is capable of playing at the two-guard spot or sliding over to a forward position.
Johnson is stronger than most players that he will play against giving him the ability to drive to the rim and finish through contact. Johnson also has a nice outside shot stretching the defense when he is not banging around in the post. These qualities have D2/D3/NAIA schools knocking on his door.
Johnson has received calls from D2/NAIA schools but has not quite received any offers. There are a plethora of D3 schools that have contacted him and continue to hold conversations. Johnson has visited Adrian, Anderson, Defiance, Franklin, and Milliken and plans to make some return visits this winter to see some games.
Coaches of all these schools have really taken a liking to Johnson’s leadership on the court and the way that he is always vocal. There is also quite a bit of other things to like about Johnson per the college coaches.
“They like my versatility. They also like the way that I can shoot the ball well and then be able to get to the bucket and finish. I think they are surprised at my athleticism.”
Johnson had a great summer running with Team Rise. Johnson developed a lot and feels that his style of play has changed from last year to this year.
“I thought my summer went well. My AAU program really helped me get shown to coaches and they have helped me a lot with the recruiting process. I have developed a lot from the summer.”
This year Waldron is one of the better teams in Sectional 60 and they look to improve on a 9-14 record from a year ago. With Johnson and his six fellow seniors, Waldron has a shot to get above .500 for the first time since two years ago when this group were all sophomores. Johnson thinks that this senior laden team has a lot of potential to make some noise.
After this year Johnson is going to have to make some decisions concerning his future. Johnson’s number one thing when considering schools this year is that he wants to be comfortable wherever he goes.
“That’s my biggest thing (being comfortable). I also want to have a good relationship with the coaching staff and players.”
