Carlson’s spent the last two seasons primarily as a sharpshooter, playing off a couple of his high-end teammates. But Carlson is much more than a very good shooter and he’s looking forward to showing it this season.
“The last two years I was strictly a shooter,” said Carlson. “With the way teams defend [Sorenson and Mitchell] I’m looking to step up as that third scorer this year. We lost some guys so I’m looking to step up.”
Carlson plays off the ball for the Cougars as Sorenson is one of the top point guards in the state but his natural spot is point guard too and that’s where he’ll likely play in college. He’s looking forward to showing those skills a little more this season too.
“This year I can take some of that load off of Jack so that he can do more things too,” said Carlson. “I’m a guy who plays smart. I play my role well. I want to do whatever is going to help our team best.”
Carlson has several local schools recruiting him and he’s taken visits to Gustavus and Bethel recently. He said he’s playing on visiting the University of Wisconsin, Lacrosse and the University of Chicago in the near future as well.
Carlson played point guard for his AAU team, Wear Out the Net and knocked down more than 40 percent of his 3-point attempts each of the last two high school seasons. So at this point, coaches know what they are getting. But there’s also an element of untapped potential too. Which is why he’s an intriguing player.
“A few teams like the way I shoot and a few have talked to me about playing point guard which is where I like to be,” said Carlson. “I like to handle the ball and make my teammates better. I think my shooting is a bonus.”
