He’s seen no significant interest yet from college coaches, and says it’s just been camp invites coming his way so far.
“I do believe I’m under the radar because some of the higher-ranked guys, I can bring it to them,” said Payne. “I hope my recruitment comes along well, but I really don’t know what’s going to happen with all that.”
At 6-foot-2, Payne is now trying to remove himself from just being a primary post player, and learn some perimeter skills. He doesn’t know how much more he might grow.
“I mainly play post, that’s what I’ve always done. But now that I’m in high school my coach has been telling me to work on my outside perimeter game because I might not get any taller,” said Payne.
“But I can bang and I can rebound, and I’m quicker than most of the other big-men. And I’m also developing a 3-point shot and I have a pretty good mid-range as well.”
After a spring and summer playing up a grade with Louisiana Razorbacks, Payne feels more ready than ever to take on the rest of his junior season with the Warriors.
“I played up with them (Razorbacks), and I played against bigger and better talent all summer,” he said. “And it felt good because I was able to score against those guys.”
His junior season is now well underway, and he and his Warriors ore off to a blistering start.
“We’ve been playing good, and my role is to be the heart of the team,” said Payne. “I come in and I bang and I hustle, and I take charges and dive on the floor.”
