Continue ReadingHamilton High School has produced countless talented athletes over the years, and is one of Arizona’s most known schools for doing such. Though primarily known as a football school, one of the more promising basketball prospects in the state can be found playing for coach Doug Harris and the Huskies. Rashad Smith is 6’4”, a premier shooter both from deep and from midrange, has division 1 athleticism, and is constantly in attack mode on both ends of the floor. We got the chance to speak with him and see how he is handling the recruiting process and preparing for the season.
After a successful season in which a young Hamilton team reached the second round of the state playoffs, they are looking to build and do more this year. “We are trying to go after all of the teams that beat us in the past year… We want to have a banner in our gym” says Smith. With him taking on more of a featuring role this season as the team’s unquestioned best player, he will be asked to create a lot of offense, not only for himself, but for his teammates as well. Additionally, he will often be tasked with guarding the opponent’s best wing player.
A member of the 2018 class, Rashad has began to see his recruitment take off, as he has received letters from the likes of Arizona, Nebraska, Boise State, and others. A natural facilitator who can score, Smith offers versatility as he can serve as a combo guard at the next level. When asked which aspect of his game most readily translates to the next level, he spoke of his decision making and court vision, which allow him to not only be projected among the top scorers in the state, but to be expected to average in the range of 6 assists per game as well. Currently working to improve his ball handling and size, he has already shown improvement in both of those areas since the end of the summer circuit. Mentioning that a collegiate program’s coaching staff will have a large impact in his decision, his high school coaches speak very highly of him both on and off the court. Rashad Smith will undoubtedly be one of the most talked about newcomers to the recruiting scene in Arizona this year.
