With the start of the 2016-17 season starting this week, we are hitting the ground running with our season preview content.
Among the content we’ll providing periodically during the start of the season is a look at candidates for the Prep Hoops Utah Player of the Year Award in the state of Utah.
So who is today’s candidate?
Branden Carlson
It’s no coincidence that the two teams Carlson has played for most recently — Bingham and Utah Exum Elite 17U — experienced big-time success.
The 6-11 Center played sparingly for Bingham last season as he played behind current BYU big man Yoeli Childs. Carlson didn’t waste his time on the bench. He was able to watch childs along with battling him in practice. This experience helped turn Carlson into a 4 star prospect.
Brandens run — which included a 5A state championship with Bingham and his club team Exum Elite, was very successful on the adidas gauntlet which helped him ramp up his college attention, and recently signed with the University of Utah of the Pac-12 Conference. Carlson went from an unknown prospect to one of the highly sought out prospects in the western United States with his dominate play during the club season.
Before Carlson starts his college career, He has something to prove on the high school level. Carlson is going from a back up, to the best player on his team. It will be interesting to see how he handles the pressure. Bingham is loaded with talent and is the clear front runner to win the 5A state championship.
Carlson averaged over 19 points per game with his club team, Utah Exum Elite. He has shown his ability to score consistently against high level players. Carlson is an unselfish player which will make Bingham even more dangerous than last year. The miners have very good guards who will be able to get him the ball in spots to score. Anything less the a 5A state championship would be a big disappointment. All eyes will be on Carlson to see if he will be as good as Childs was last year.
