We want to continue to follow these prospects as they navigate these two years of basketball. With that in mind, we are going to take a look every so often at who is playing well at the JUCO level. With over 60 prospects from Indiana playing Junior College basketball this year, we have plenty of players to choose from.
Texas Tech Commit Putting Up Big Numbers
Former East Chicago Central (IN) and Indiana Elite guard Hyron Edwards is having a stellar start to the season for his Trinity Valley (TX) team. He has 127 points through five games netting him an average of 25.4 points per contest. His free throw percentage is what is standing out so far. He is 44/46 from the line (95.7%). That seems like a big jump from what he did in high school. He’s also shooting 44.4% from the field which is a little low as he does most of his work in transition, hence the high free throw attempts. He isn’t giving much in the way of other statistical categories (1.4 rpg, 1.8 apg) but he is shooting the ball ridiculously well and one of the best scorers in all of the Junior College level so far.
Freshman Standing Out Early
There are already a couple of freshman having solid starts to their junior college campaign. Guys like Darnell Butler, Andre Jones, and Tremell Murphy are putting up big numbers through at least four games this year.
Butler, the former McCutcheon (IN) wing now at Missouri St-West Plains, is shooting the ball really well from deep. Normally a guy that does quite a bit of work from behind the line, looks like he is playing his role perfectly to start the year. He is 53.7% from three this year, going 22/41. That is a lot to start the year but one of the keys for Butler was how he would fit in to a system and so far it looks good.
Andre Jones looks like he is ready for a good season with Arizona Western. The former Muncie Central (IN) star is already averaging 14.2 points through five games this year. He’s also doing well on the boards as he already has 10 offensive rebounds, 22 total rebounds on the year. This is a big part of his game, the ability to play around the rim and score on the glass.
Former Griffith (IN) forward, Tremell Murphy, is doing his thing down at Florida Southwestern State. He has 66 points through four games (16.5 ppg). He’s shooting the ball really well at 51.2% from the field and the charity stripe too going 21/25 to date. However, he is near a double-double a game with 8.5 rebounds. He’s going to have to cut down on his turnovers (11) but so far he’s one of the best prospects from Indiana at filling up the whole stat sheet.
Need Shooters? Here Are A Few
Indiana is known for it’s bevy of shot-makers and there are a few at the junior college level this year that would be ready for a four-year college next season. Nate Hansen of Vincennes is having another great year so far shooting. He is 16/29 for 55.2% from the arc. Rasheide Bell of South Suburban is also shooting above 50% going 9/16. As well as Lincoln Trail guard Bryant Givens who is shooting 8/15 through four games for 53.3%.
