Here we break down the top available point guards and their projected college level in part one of our look at the floor generals.
Alonzo Verge (Thornton)
Verge is an electric ball handler that is also a dynamic scoring threat. Has a very exciting game, but at times can get a little out of control. D1 prospect that will probably have to go the JUCO route as the top JC prospect in the state.
Jacob Keller (Fenwick)
Keller is a left handed 6’2” point guard that had a great summer and is primed for a huge senior season. Lock down perimeter defender that also knows how to run a team. MM to LM+ prospect.
Mark Smith (Edwardsville)
This was one of the candidates to sign during the early period after taking officials to NIU, SIUE, and Wright State. Smith decided to not sign and will continue his recruitment. Strong lead guard with a good feel for running a team and hits open shots. Mid-major prospect.
CJ Coldon (Belleville Althoff)
Coldon is a high IQ point guard that runs the show for perhaps the best team in the state. He is one of the top football wide receivers in Illinois and will most likely go that route for college. If he was to decide to play hoops he would be a LM-/D2 prospect.
Jalen Clanton (Riverside Brookfield)
Smooth 6’0” point guard that has a solid feel for running a team and getting others involved. Streaky shooter with range. Just very solid and not flashy. Projects as a D2 prospect.
Marcus Garrett (Hillcrest)
Garrett is expected to have a monster senior campaign for Hillcrest. The scoring point guard is best when the ball is in his hands and he has the green light. Looking to come back from a slow summer. High D2 prospect with the chance to elevate to LM status.
Aundrae Williams (Springfield Lanphier)
Williams is an athletic and rangy point guard that really gets after it on the defensive end of the floor. Solid ball handler that makes good decisions with it and makes plays in the open floor. No offers on the table at this point. Should be under consideration at the D2 level.
Josiah Wallace (Marshall)
Wallace is a very talented 6’3” point guard that had some off the court issues early in his junior year. That seems to be in the past now and after reopening his recruitment from Southern Indiana he has a chance to elevate his stock this season into the D2+/LM category. Smooth point guard that has a feel for the game and vision to find teammates.
Jason Towers (St. Joseph’s)
Towers is a 6’0” uber athletic point guard that will have to step up this year and play a major role for St. Joe’s. He changes the game with his athleticism, speed, and defensive potential. JUCO prospect.
Nico Johnson (Danville)
Johnson is a prospect that at 6’0” has some combo guard skills where he can both score and distribute. Was a bit hidden on the circuit, but has a pair of D1 offers. Will be interesting to track this season.
Octavius Parker (Kenwood)
Parker is the new guy at Kenwood, but has a chance to be a key piece from the jump. The 6’0” point guard has solid size and the potential to be a threat from deep. Streaky shooter, but can get really hot at times. Would like to see him diversify his game this season. D2/high D3 prospect.
Joey Coffaro (Hersey)
Coffaro can flat out shoot the basketball. The 5’11” lead guard is tough as nails, moves well without the ball, and can handle it a little. Leader. He will be a great high level D3 player.
Jack Nolan (Benet)
Nolan is one of the premier perimeter shooters in the state of Illinois. He can flat out shoot the rock with deep range. The 5’11” point guard is a priority D3 prospect.
Grant Wolfe (Effingham)
Wolfe is one of the top players in southern Illinois. He is a high IQ guard that knows how to run a team, get others involved, and knock down jumpers from mid-range/three. Potential D2 prospect that is a priority D3 kid.
