Top recruit Zion Williamson was too much for Proviso East in the end scoring 50 points and initiating the defeat of Proviso East 89-77.
Leading scorers: Proviso East: Quinlan Bennett 21, Jaelan Hood 18, Tyler Chisom 11. Spartansburg Day: Zion Williamson 50, Kyle Tracy 18, Bishop Richardson 15.
MVP: Zion Williamson (Spartansburg Day)
Williamson was all anybody could have thought. Scoring 50 points and setting a new Tournament of Champions record, he brought the court to life. He muscled his way to the basket and was the best player of the tournament. He is one of the best in the country.
Best offensive performance: Quinlan Bennett (Proviso East)
Bennett had a really good night on the offensive end scoring in a lot of different ways. He had 21 and it came with scoring at all three levels. It was nice to see him hit a few jumpers and also get to the basket and finish.
Best defensive performance: Tyler Chisom (Proviso East)
Chisom was good in the game on defense patrolling the perimeter. He really helped shut down the three point production and he can’t be faulted to the loss. Most of the scoring was on the inside as he closed out shooters quickly.
Best Aspect of the Game: The crowd at Washington
There was a lot of buzz surrounding Torry Gym before the game and the leftover crowd from the day’s action was really impressive. They cheered for both teams and it gave the game a lot of energy. It was really loud and that was what made this game even more special.
Best Takeaway: Zion Williamson is really good. Jump out of your seat good, and he showed it tonight. He has pieces around him as well that can help him out. Proviso East is going to be solid this year as well. They kept it close and scored 49 points in the second half. They are going to be really good late in the season.
