Best 10: Covington vs. Brown County
Brown County came out hot draining six three-pointers in the opening half but Covington stayed close behind the work inside of forward Spencer Pettit. Pettit scored Covington’s first seven points. Junior Erza Scully made three deep balls in the half to extend the Brown County halftime lead to 29-23.
Covington struggled a bit in the third quarter but really blew it open in the fourth quarter. Covington scored on all but three possessions to take a quick lead and blow it open winning 57-47.
Leading scorers: Covington: Spencer Pettit 28, Luke Cooper 13. Brown County: Jordan Samples 12, Eli Patterson 11.
Leading rebounders: Covington: Spencer Pettit 7. Brown County: Josh Cochran 12.
MVP: Spencer Pettit (Covington)
Pettit did it all for Covington today. He really got after it on the offensive end scoring his team’s first nine points. He showed a nice outside shot as well knocking down three triples and got after it defensively as well.
Best offensive performance: Josh Cochran (Brown County)
Cochran only scored six points but he opened up the perimeter shooters for Covington a lot as he drew two defenders on every touch. He cleaned up on the offensive glass which was to be expected for a 6’9 kid.
Best defensive performance: Tanner Cates (Covington)
Cates was pretty good defensively for his team in this one pressing the passing lanes and being in good spots all day. He had a few steals and flew around to the ball. He did a good job matched up on the big guy inside.
Best under-the-radar performance: Hunter First (Brown County)
First was a energy guy off the bench for Brown County. He came in and gave them some minutes and grabbed four rebounds. He really kept his team together on the coach and can’t be overlooked for that.
Best guy off the bench: Chandler Rowe (Covington)
Rowe was pretty good as one of the two contributors in the scorebook off the bench he got a huge bucket to stop the momentum of Brown County and he grabbed three rebounds as well. He is a long lanky kid that can really be a nice bench piece.
Plays of the game: Covington’s 4th quarter offensive performance
Covington scored 20 points in the fourth quarter and scored on five straight possessions to start the frame. They played with a ton of energy as well and really got after it.
Best intangibles: Jordan Samples (Brown County)
Samples played with a ton of heart in this one. He really brought energy and his team built off of it. He got a technical foul for showing too much emotion but at that stage of the game it did not really hurt his team as Covington had all the momentum.
Best underclassman: Ty Bever (Covington)
Bever really impressed me in this game. He’s a pure point guard that looked really strong with the ball. He had five assists and really found the right guy every time down the court. He played hard defense as well.
Best Shoes: Covington’s Adidas Crazy Explosive Team Shoes
The team shoes from Covington really caught my eye. The grey shoes look good with their grey sleeves/socks they wore with them. Best looking gear I have seen yet this year.
Best Takeaway: Covington is going to be a good 1A team once again this year. They don’t have as much height as they have in years past but they are really tough and really good fundamentally. Brown County was really hot early in the game but only hit one three in the second half which was the reason they led in the first half, but eventually lost because they could not keep hitting.
Scouting
Spencer Pettit (Covington) – 2018 G/F – Pettit is a lean, strong guy that can play either inside with his toughness or on the perimeter with his shooting. Pettit has pretty good handles and is strong with the ball. He’s a kid to watch in the 2018 class.
Ty Bever (Covington) – 2019 PG – Bever really was impressive. He is a pass first point, with a very high basketball IQ. Not the tallest of kids but he can grow a little bit more. Can score on the drive as well.
Josh Cochran (Brown County) – 2017 C – Cochran is a very mobile big guy inside that can score over smaller defenders. Needs to become a bit stronger with the ball, but he is an excellent rebounder.
Erza Scully (Brown County) – 2018 G – Scully is a thick bodied kid that looks to score. He can shoot it from deep and he can get the ball to the hole and score there as well. He was impressive as the primary guy to score.
