The Basketball Interview with Lucas Mayer
At your school, what is your favorite part or parts about game days in terms of the routine leading up to the game?
“The best part about pre game is our team dinners before every home game, we go from a short pre game practice right to a team dinner with lots of food and it’s good team bonding.”
What makes your crowd unique? What is a memorable thing that they’ve done that you will always remember?
“I’d say what makes our crowd at games unique is that the student section is always really good with chants and stuff and plus we usually have a huge band every game that takes up half of the bleachers that is really loud and impressive.”
Who is the toughest player you can recall playing against in North Dakota basketball and why?
“I’d say the toughest player I remember playing against is Jordan Meidinger from Dickinson just because of how big he is and how hard he goes to the glass.”
Who is your biggest rival and what about them makes the rivalry both heated and memorable?
“I would say our biggest rival would be Minot just because of how the last couple seasons we have both been the 1 and 2 seeds, and usually we meet up once or twice in the postseason and they are our toughest competition.”
Who is your favorite basketball player in the world and why?
“I would say my favorite basketball player in the world would be Blake Griffin because he’s so versatile, athletic and fun too watch.”
All basketball players love gear. What brand of gear or type of gear are you partial to?
“I wear all Nike or Jordan for shoes, and socks I wear whatevers comfy.”
What is your favorite venue to play basketball in that you’ve played in?
“My favorite venue would probably be our main gym at Century.”
What court that you haven’t played on would you dream of playing on?
“I would say I would want to play on Target Center’s court because I’m a Timberwolves fan.”
Explain the relationship varsity players have at your school with youth players?
“Our relationship with the younger players is very connected, all open gyms we have even mixes of younger players and the varsity on each team, and during fundraisers and community service the varsity guys are always paired with a younger to sort of show them the ropes.”
Best coaching advice you’ve received is what and who was it from?
“Best advice I’ve received was from my head coach Mattern at Century who always preaches how the work you do when no one is watching is the most important.”
Who is your basketball influence?
“I’d say my basketball influence would be my dad.”
