In addition to these top tier teams, the rest of the region looks to be quite competitive. There are a number of teams in this group who could end up seeing their names on the state tournament bracket.
Metro Top 3
Yuma Catholic – It is hard to choose against a team who was 30-1 last year. It is even harder with the amount of talent that they have returning. Yuma was the state champion last year for their division. Moreover, they were considered one of the top 50 teams in the state regardless of classification. The team returns talented prospects 2017 Daniel Callendar, 2017 Blake Sandoval, and 2018 Parley Kirkham. This group will click right at the get go due to the amount of talent returning and they could be poised to do more than just win the Metro region as they will square off with some bigger schools early in the same. This is probably a 3A team that many 5A or 6A schools do not want to see.
Valley Christian – If Yuma Catholic is the favorite in this region, Valley Christian should be 1A in the group. This team returns numerous talented prospects who were essential to the teams success the past couple of seasons. 2017 Matthew Svorinic is one of the key players that anyone watching Valley Christian should be aware of. He sets the tempo for the team and shoots the basketball at a high rate. In addition to Svorinic, look for 2019 PG Jalen Grijalva and 2017 Christian Kamerman to be crucial returners who keep Valley Christian on the path to a Metro Region title and a potential 3A State title.
Fountain Hills High School – Despite not having as much success as Yuma Catholic and Valley Christian last season, Fountain Hills returns the majority of its roster and should be poised to have quite a bit of success this season. The leaders for this group are returners 2017 Joe Wagner, 2017 Bryce Andrashie, and 2017 Teo Vargas. All three players have already assisted in the team’s early season wins as they currently stand at 2-1. Look for this group to challenge for the Metro region title and be much improved in comparison to last season.
Best of the Rest
Casteel High School – Despite being in its first season at the Varsity level, this group likes quite talented early on, and they should be ready to compete in this region. Look for 2019 Chris York to lead the way for this team.
