Continue ReadingDaryl Mackey Jr. averaged 12.1 points per game as a freshman for Head Coach David Houston at West Potomac last season. As a starter for the Patriot District Champions, Mackey demonstrated a strong work rate and consistent aggression to go along with high level athleticism.
“I’m a player that likes to really just get the ball and score,” said Mackey when asked what type of player he is. “I like the three point shot, but most of the time I drive to the basket.”
A native of Alexandria, Mackey recalls playing basketball for the first time around ten years ago. He admittedly needs to continue to work on his ball handling, defense, and decision making, but being vocal is one thing Mackey does that most people don’t realize.
“I try to communicate with my teammates a lot,” he stated.
Right now, Mackey is still relatively under the radar in recruiting circles, but we expect that to change very soon given his versatility in conjunction with his consistently high motor and elite athleticism.
We witnessed Mackey’s ability to score in bunches last season during West Potomac’s regional semifinal loss vs. Battlefield, where he erupted for a game high 23 points. What can coaches who are recruiting Mackey expect him to bring to a program at the next level?
“Expect my hard work, effort, and just trying to score on the court.”
