Teams: Gary 21st Century, Washington Township, Westville, Kouts, Morgan Township, LaCrosse
Last Year: Last year was the season for Eugene German and Gary 21st Century. The senior guard did well to lead his team through a difficult gauntlet of teams and first was getting out of this underrated Sectional. Five of the six teams in the Sectional had a record of .500 or better, three with 15 or more wins. Gary 21st got their run all the way until Semistate but came up short to Liberty Christian. Washington Township and Morgan Township also had very good season up north.
Contenders For 2016-17: After their long run last year, don’t expect Gary 21st to be dominant as they were led by a foursome of seniors. Morgan Township is also in the same boat as they lose quite a bit of their offense from a year ago. Two teams really stand out as potential competitors, Westville and Washington Township. Westville will be a team to focus on as they were a very young group. Cade Albers, now a junior, is their leading returning scorer and will give them a chance to move over .500 this season and play at the end of the season. Washington Township will lose their best scorer in outgoing senior Alex Perez but the return of most of their team could give them a boost. With only three outgoing seniors, they look like a solid bet to reload the best out of this Sectional.
Player To Watch: With much of this Sectional really coming into the season as an unknown, two guys standout right now as potential big time players. Cade Albers of Westville and DeAndre Gholston of Gary 21st Century. Albers is a small guard that packs a big punch averaging 16.1 points per game last season. As a small guard in 1A, size isn’t that big of an issue as long as you have the toughness to take over the game. For Gholston, he outscored Albers last season by just five points. Gary 21st is still a wildcard in this Sectional but it is hard to envision how they will look without Eugene German who scored 33.5 points per contest. If they are going to have a chance, the best bet to up their scoring will be the junior, DeAndre Gholston.
