Teams: Indianapolis Howe, Shenandoah, Irvington Prep Academy, Triton Central, Eastern Hancock, Knightstown
Last Year: Last season, two of the best 2A teams in the state were in this Sectional 42. Both Shenandoah and Indianapolis Howe were very, very good as they had 21 and 23 wins, respectively. However, it was Howe that made it out alive and wound up getting all the way to the State Finals. Eventually, they lost to Lapel but it was a tremendous season for both schools. This Sectional was very top heavy but a few of these programs might be trending up soon.
Contenders For 2016-17: As we said, last season was a wide-variation of good and bad teams but teams like Knightstown and Triton Central are trending up as the majority of their talent is underclassmen. Will that be enough promise to get them into contention this season? Not likely but I expect both to make significant jumps. Howe loses Brian “Kip” Warren and that will hurt from the the guard spot but both Tony Hopkins and Kycia Washington return and should still provide enough offense. Who fits into the backcourt with Kycia is the big question to give this team a third weapon. For Shenandoah, Coach McCollough has his team dialed in pretty well and the only real huge loss is Mason Griggs (9.0 ppg, 3.4 apg). Shenandoah and Howe should repeat and meet in the Sectional Finals but could see either team winning it in a potential rematch.
Player To Watch: The guy I’m paying the closest attention to is Gavin Griggs. The senior from Shenandoah had a huge season as a junior for them dropping 19.8 points and 6.7 rebounds. Repeating that is going to be difficult but still pretty likely. Hard to imagine him improving upon that but if he does that could spark this team into a new level as the offense is going to be pivotal if they are to take down Howe this season.
