Teams: Silver Creek, Brownstown Central, Charlestown, Salem, North Harrison, Corydon Central, Scottsburg
Last Season: For the last few years, this has been one of the best Sectionals in the entire state. A 7-team Sectional that always seems to have contenders from top to bottom gets that kind of notoriety. This past year, it was Silver Creek’s turn to take home the Sectional title with a win over a good Salem team. This group had five teams with a record better than .500 but the bottom of the Sectional, Corydon Central and Scottsburg, only combined for three wins.
Contenders for 2016-17: This season should do a lot to prove the depth of this Sectional as Silver Creek will be down their top two scorers that averaged 32.5 ppg combined. However, the do return a lot of guys who contributed pretty well. The question is if they can step up quickly enough after the loss of six seniors. Salem should compete pretty well again although the loss of Micah Collins and Jordan Baker will hurt. Charlestown and Brownstown Central always seem to reload no matter what but the two teams at the bottom could get significantly better and help to even out the Sectional. Corydon and Scottsburg lose one senior between the two groups and they would likely get better while it doesn’t seem like there is a clear cut leader in the Sectional with all the top teams rebuilding to at least some extent. Don’t think Corydon or Scottsburg can really compete this season but should be heading back that way.
Players to Watch: Two guys standout as guys to watch this winter, Jake Book of North Harrison and Zane Gross of Silver Creek. Book is the highest returning scorer in the Sectional and he has one of the best teams returning. He averaged 11.0 points per game last season and if he can step that up to 15 or more, this group could get right back near the top again. Gross is one of the best shooter in this part of the state and while Silver Creek lost a lot of low post scoring, Gross could make up some of the offense if he is given some shooting opportunities. He could help make this another quick turnaround as well.
