Continue ReadingWalter Ellis is the 17th ranked junior in the class out of South Bend Adams and he’s starting to make that seem low after the summer that he had. The 6’4 shooting guard has been working on his game and it is starting to show dividends in his recruiting process.
Ellis has been offered by Ball State University, IUPUI, and Valparaiso University. He has taken a visit to Valparaiso and plans on visiting Belmont University on October 20th and possibly Indiana State University on the 21st.
The coaches that have talked to Ellis really like, “my shooting ability and versatility on defense. Recently they have started to notice my improved handle and ability to get different shots off with my handle.
Ellis thought that his AAU season went well, but could have gone better if he would have been more aggressive on the offensive end. He says that he had fun though and after being with a new AAU team in July he thought he could have been more aggressive and assertive on it.
Even though he thinks that this was something he could have done better, he has been busy all summer long improving many areas of his game, including one important one for his position.
“Ball handling. That is what we have dedicated the whole fall to. For me at a shooting guard that is 6’4, it is necessary to handle the ball well. We really wanted to make the change from just a good shooter and defender, to a versatile combo guard that can do everything. Also I have worked on playing off a pivot, ball screen reads, and playing with different paces. We still continue to groove my shot and try to make it more efficient and fluid. But the main area we have been trying to improve is ball handling.”
Even though Ellis is working on these things, he says that coaches also have noticed that he can be a leader on the court.
“A big thing is that I do not need the ball in my hand all the time to be effective and I take pride in the fact that I can make an impact on the game without being a ball dominator. But if a coach does ever need me to be the primary ball handler, I can assume that position also.”
Ellis will have multiple options for a future school as his recruiting takes off this winter and AAU season next year but for now he is pretty open to the type of school that he wants to attend.
“I would like a place that I can compete for a starting spot my freshman year and a program that will push me to be the best player I can be.”
