The reason: Matthews says it will help him to fulfill his ultimate goal.
“I felt like the move would put me in a better position to reach the D1 level,” said the 5-foot-11 point guard.
Currently, Matthews holds no offers, and though he’s seen interest come in during various stages of his career, and from a variety of levels, his recruitment has been somewhat slow.
“During the summer going into my junior year Tulane was really, really interested in me. But then their coaching staff got fired and I haven’t really been getting the same love as I was before.”
“I went to a camp this summer at Texas State and picked up some interest from them, and LIU-Brooklyn has shown a little bit of interest,” said Matthews, who mentioned LSUA (Louisiana State of Alexandria) has been interested as well.
“Right now I’m working really hard in the gym so I can get better for the season and really I’m just trying to get the best numbers I can. And if anything doesn’t come I’ll play on the 17U circuit again next season and try and pick up some more interest that way – but that’s only if I don’t pick up any offers.”
Matthews laid out for PHLA what he excels at, and where he needs to see the most improvement.
“The best thing I do right now is my pull-up jumper, and I think I bring a lot of energy to the floor when I’m playing,” he said.
“I feel like I need to work on finishing and being more explosive at the rim, especially if I want to play at the D1 level. Because right now I’m not a D1 level guy as far as explosion towards the rim. And I need to add a little bit more strength and I’ll be ready.”
As he gets set for his senior season in Texas, the former Kittens point guard says he’ll need to step in and be a leader right away.
“I feel my role will be to bring leadership and leading some of the younger guys on the team. And making the right plays on the floor and directing my guys,” said Matthews. ‘And having a positive attitude everyday, whether it’s a practice or a game.”
