Top 40 – 10-6
10. Steele Bennett 6’9 PF/C 2018 Desert Vista
Bennett has improved his footwork and his touch around the rim greatly. In addition, he is more willing to compete for space. In the past, he would be reluctant, at times, to try to impose his will and create deep seals. He is maturing and more willing to participate in the contact. Moreover, he has improved his ability to shoot the mid-range jumper which should help greatly in high post entries as well as pick and pop type situations. Defensively, he gets up and down the court well, which enables him to be a rim protector. He competes well at the high school level, but he will need to continue to improve his strength and quickness in order to guard 4s and 5s at the next level.
9. Bilson Piebade 6’10 PF/C 2017 Hillcrest Prep
Piebade has length, athleticism, and a good motor. He has good footwork on the block and a soft touch. Moreover, he is capable of shooting the basketball from beyond the painted area. His ability to get up and down the court, mixed with his height and athleticism, make him a top tier prospect. Add to it the improvements that he has made to his game, he should be ready for a high caliber season while playing next to one of the best players in the entire nation, DeAndre Ayton.
8. KJ Hymes 6’10 PF/C 2018 Saint Mary’s
Not too long ago, Hymes looked like a long freshman with a lot of promise. Now, Hymes is an upperclassmen who has realized a lot of that potential. There are many positives about this young man, hence the many NCAA Division-1 offers despite only being a Junior. Some of those positives include his athleticism, length, and touch around the rim. He finishes the ball at a high level, and he has the versatility to guard a lot of 4s and 5s at the next level. Hymes has already earned a lot of next level love; however, he will definitely receive plenty more by the time that the recruiting process ends for this big man,
7. Marcus Shaver 6’1 PG 2017 Shadow Mountain
Shaver recently committed to two programs – Shadow Mountain and UC Santa Barbara. It is crazy to think about, but not too long ago Hymes and Shaver were teammates. Now, St. Mary’s will be responsible for game planning for him twice this year. This is no small task as Shaver has tremendous vision and can shoot the basketball from anywhere on the court. He has good elevation on his shot which enables him to shoot over the vast majority of defenders, and he does a good job of stopping on a dime and pulling at a high rate. This gets the defender pushed back just enough for Shaver to be able to create a shot for himself. Shadow Mountain will have some of the best guard play in the entire state with Shaver, Blacksher, and House. Despite being gone for a year, it is easy to justify Shaver coming back and being in the Top 40 Rankings at this spot.
6. Timmy Allen 6’6 SF/PF 2018 Red Mountain
Allen made news recently due to making the decision to transfer from Desert Ridge to Red Mountain. Needless to say, Red Mountain’s fortunes improved greatly due to the addition of this Top 40 and 4 star prospect. Allen has the size, strength, and skill set to take smaller opponents on the block and take advantage of the mismatch. In addition, he is capable of shooting the basketball from deep and has a good first step when attacking out of triple threat. His handle is also solid, especially when considering his position. Lastly, Allen has good versatility which enables him to guard the majority of 4s and 5s which will assist him greatly in his collegiate recruitment and ability to plat at that level.
