The Favorites
Nathan Reuvers (Lakeville North). Based entirely on last year’s individual and team success (huge numbers, big scores in big moments, second place team at state), and combining that with Nate’s level of talent, he would be my preseason favorite for the award based on the past. North is going to be very good, Reuvers will put up big numbers, and if North wins state I feel like he will get it. But….
McKinley Wright (Champlin Park). The committee has constantly shown they have a love for guards over the years. And the guard on the preseason number one is Dayton bound McKinley Wright. Considering I have them as preseason number one that’s saying I think they will win a very wide open Class AAAA and if that happens, McKinley will likely win it. That said…
Brad Davison (Maple Grove). Many I speak to in the local hoops community believe Brad will win the award. Why? For one he’s an excellent player. Davison is Wisconsin bound and a nationally ranked top 100 guy by many services. Brad has also been playing at a high level since day one of ninth grade, he’s a high character student athlete, and he’s the top guard on a team that could win it.
Goanar Mar (DeLaSalle). Let’s change the momentum with last year’s Class AAA Player of the year and a three time state champion. Goanar is another high character student athlete who is a nationally ranked top 200 player headed to George Mason and he has a very good chance at being a two time Class AAA Player of the year and four time state champ. That should get a serious look at Mr. Basketball.
Contenders
Ishmael El-Amin/Simon Wright (Hopkins). Simon and Ishmael are combined because what we have to say is pretty much the same. They are the top players back on the defending state champions and they are on a top Class AAAA contender. If they win state one or both of them could be a final five contender.
Jericho Sims (Cristo Rey). Jericho without a doubt has the talent to win this award. He is a top 50 player headed to Texas. What is against him is that he’s at the Class A level and for him to make a Mr. Basketball run his team will likely have to make a state title run and for that to happen they need to beat North.
Myles Hanson (Chaska). Hanson had an incredible junior year and if he can team with Andrew Kallman and make the Hawks even better, they could be a state contender too. And it that happens the Columbia commit could make the final five.
Trae Berhow (Watertown-Mayer). Berhow is a massive number producer. We are talking about a potential 30 and 15 guy with a lot of other extra numbers. And if he can get his team to a state run, he will force people to look his way.
Isaac Johnson (Minneapolis North). Top player back from a state champion and a team that is favored to win the title again. If the Polars do, the Western Illinois commit will force some looks his direction.
Bryce Irsfeld (Browerville). Bryce took his team to state last year and is likely to do so again and put up massive numbers. His numbers, team record, and a deep state trip will bring his name up.
