This spring, King was up and down most of the season with a back injury. He played through it and still was able to be a solid player for his Pocket City Basketball team but he needed to heal. Now, he’s 100% and back in the swing of things. In the Metro Indy Fall League, you got to see a little bit of the player King should be.
Alex was playing a lot more aggressive and given his slight frame, he needs to be like that all of the time. In the two weeks I watched, he look much better and that gave him the ability to play well inside and out. He actually played more in and around the basket than he usually would. His perimeter jumper looked solid and he had a few games where he dominated the statistical categories.
The thing you will need to see from King this winter is the continued approach on the offensive end. Would love to see him continue to be a strong inside presence and keep the aggressive mentality up. If he does, coaches will really want to stay on him because at 6’8, he has the kind of upside that could make him a steal for a team.
So far, the two offers he has in hand are from military schools, Army and Navy. He still has some of the local programs keeping tabs like Indiana State and Ball State.
Last year, King was almost a near double-double guy with 14.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. He didn’t shoot it great from three, 29%, but he’s improved it continually since his freshman season. He shot 42% from the field for a guy that doesn’t typically play near the rim. He had a couple huge games last year. 31 points against Franklin Central and 24 points against Martinsville and Terre Haute North. All three of those schools had enough size to throw at him but he still managed to put up those numbers.
That is what will be key for him in 2016-17, Alex needs more big games and if you see a tick up in rebounding and scoring around the rim, then the part of his game that he has been working on this fall, the interior, you know that is taking hold. He has all the upside you want, just watch and see if he can put it all together in his senior season.
