Here we breakdown the prospects that shined in this detail extensive scouting report. In this report we evaluate part two of the 2018 prospects in attendance.
C Mick Sullivan (Marmion Academy – 2018)
Sullivan is one of the better center prospects in the Illinois 2018 class. At 6’9” he has a strong build and plays with physicality. What makes him intriguing is he also has some mobility to his game. Sullivan can step out and hit a mid-range jumper. He especially likes the one from 15 foot on the baseline. The Marmion Academy post is an outstanding rebounder. Improving skill on the block including a jump hook. He rebounds both inside and out of his area. Tough offensive rebounder that fights and claws for second chance opportunities.
PG Branden Ellis (Warren – 2018)
Ellis is a track athlete that might have had the play of the event as early in the camp he rose up and hammered a dunk on Wisconsin commit Tyler Herro. Now that he is healthy he is starting to show the bounce that we had heard about so much. Jumper didn’t fall as much as we have seen in the past, but he definitely is an adequate shooter. Showing more floor general skills is the next step in his development. D2 prospect at this stage.
SG Quinlan Bennett (Proviso East – 2018)
Huge fan of this Proviso East shooting guard. The 6’3” rangy wing is a versatile prospect that is a mismatch on the offensive end as he can take bigger guys off the bounce and score on the interior against smaller opponents. Bennett had a sick tip dunk. Solid ball handler. Defends well being able to check multiple positions. Low-major D1 prospect.
PF Jordan Morris (Proviso East – 2018)
Morris is a 6’5” power forward that is built like an NFL defensive end. He has a physical body and explosive athleticism. Morris probably isn’t going to grow more so he is trying to develop some perimeter skills. It looked a bit forced however. He is at his best when going on the interior using his athleticism and strength while playing with energy. Projects as a D3, NAIA, or JUCO prospect.
PG Ahmad Muhammad (St. Joseph’s – 2018)
Muhammad is a 6’0” point guard that is coming off a solid summer. He is a quick and shifty lead guard that handles it well and pushes in the open floor. Solid passer that sets up his teammates particularly well when driving and kicking to his shooters. Sound mid-range shooter that needs to be more consistent from three. High D2 prospect with the change to elevate.
C Jake James (Limestone – 2018)
Standing at 6’10” James has legit size and strength to play the center position in college. Broad shouldered post that has a strong base. Area rebounder that positions his body when boxing out. Somewhat mechanical and raw in other areas of his game, but with his size he is definitely one to continue to track.
G Barak Diehl (Warren – 2018)
Diehl is a point guard from Warren Township that can really shoot it from three. The junior is an outstanding three point threat off the catch with pure mechanics. Projects as a D3 shooting specialist.
F Caleb Strohmeier (Edwardsville – 2018)
Big fan of the college potential in this 6’7” combo forward. He is usually an effective shooter from mid-range out to three. It wasn’t falling in the game we evaluated, but he still made an impact. Strohmeier plays with such a great motor and tenacity. Competes every single possession. Crashes the glass and is a sneaky athlete. Low-major D1 prospect.
SG Lamont Cole (Streamwood – 2018)
Cole is a thick bodied 6’1” wing from Streamwood High School. Flashed some perimeter shooting ability. D3 prospect.
SG Malachi Smith (Belleville East – 2018)
Smith is one of the biggest wing stock risers since the July live periods. We liked what he brought to the table as a sophomore at Belleville East and thought he flashed potential, but he has taken that step from prospect to player over the last few months. Slick scorer that has a tremendous fluidity and ease to his game. Handles it well being able to win off the bounce and beat the help side defense to the rim. Streaky shooter, but does have range that can stretch out to beyond the arc as he connected on a few from there. Also is an underrated passer for an off guard. Tracking as a low-major prospect with the arrow up.
PF Alex Smith (Belleville East – 2018)
Smith is a 6’6” power forward that isn’t the greatest athlete, but he was still fairly effective. The junior is crafty around the hoop and has a soft touch. Gets deep post position. D3 prospect.
F Dadrian Hoambrecker (Burlington, IA – 2018)
The Iowa product who plays with the Illinois Irish on the circuit is a projectable 6’5” long and lanky combo forward. Showed well in drills with skill set. Slight hitch in shot, but did knock down several. D2 potential.
PF Blake Weiss (Mascoutah – 2018)
Weiss is a 6’6” power forward that is a quality athlete. He had a few athletic finishes around the hoop including a finish over a 6’10” big. Quality mid-range shooter, but he needs to speed the release up on it. Rebounds both in and out of his area. Mobility projects well on the defensive end of the floor. Contests shots on the perimeter. Low-major/D2 prospect.
