Sonoran Top Teams
Cholla High School – Despite losing a 25 point per game scorer in James Dominguez, Cholla only had two Seniors who contributed solid varsity minutes. In fact, three of the teams five leading scorers and contributors from last season were sophomores. Look for 2018 prospects Marcel Dean, Javon Jones, and Devin Stubblefield to take over the production, and then some, of what will be missed with Dominguez’s departure. Dean and Jones shot the ball at a remarkable rate last season as they averaged over one three pointer per game and shot the ball at over 40% from the arc. Stubblefield will provide the team with a slashing and post presence. He is a tough young man with a good motor and good athleticism. In addition to averaging a little over 6 points per game, he contributed almost as much on the glass. This looks to be the most complete team at this point in time in the Sonoran region.
Marana High School – Despite posting a 10-16 record last season, Marana returns the vast majority of its roster. 2018 Eric Jamison will be expected to extend the court with his shooting as he made almost half of the three pointers for this team last season en route to averaging about 8 points per game as a junior. In addition to Jamison, This team will look for Michael Haskins to continue his relentless efforts on the glass as he continues to contribute near double double type numbers. Lastly, expect PG Adam Welchert to set the tempo for this team and put players in a position to be successful. This group potentially has the most depth out of any team in the Sonoran region and has the play makers necessary to be a legitimate contender for the Sonoran title. It is hard to imagine that Marana will not finish in one of the two to spots in this region.
Flowing Wells High School – More so than Cholla, there will be some questions as to who will take over the production from departed seniors. This particular team had a solid season last year, but lost a good portion of its roster. The primary returners who earned some minutes last year are 2018 Garrett Woolridge and 2019 Tomani Harris. It is important to note that the only other two players who were listed on their varsity roster last season were another 2019 in Demari Harris and 2017 Jackson Burgess. In order for this team to contend for this region title and a state tournament run, it would be expected that Woolridge and T. Harris up their production significantly.
Sonoran Best of the Rest
Poston Butte High School – Beringer will be the team’s key to success in the upcoming season. Poston Butte lose their two leading scorers but will have the 6’8 big man holding down the paint. The question is whether or not the guards are able to assist him in being productive on the block and as a stretch/pop 4.
