Continue ReadingThe official start of the 2016-17 high school basketball season in Virginia is still more than two months away, but we can refer to Saturday it’s unofficial start.
Why? Because you won’t find a better event in the state to get you ready for the season than the Vantage Hoops Top 250 Expo, which will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday at Randolph Macon College in Richmond.
There roughly 200 players who will be in attendance at the event, with respected coaches guiding them through skill exercises before having the chance to compete in games against their talented peers. There is simply no better stage for players to grow their game, face stiff competition and get exposure in front of the Prep Hoops staff.
With that, our preview of the Top 250 begins with a look at some of the wings who will be in attendance. Below are some players who we expect to make noise at the event. If you’re not on the list, you’re still in the right place, with a chance to show us what you’ve got come Sunday!
Michael Christmas | Landstown ’19
Versatility is the name of the game when referring to Mike Christmas. At around 6-foot-5, Christmas is a good athlete who has demonstrated the ability to stretch the floor with consistency from the perimeter. Christmas is also an exceptional rebounder with soft hands and a high motor. Given his strong academic record, we expect Ivy League programs to actively pursue Christmas.
Joe Davis III | Battlefield ’17
One of the most consistent scoring threats of the grassroots season had to be Joe Davis. The talented two guard often recorded 20 plus points in a game this summer for his AAU squad, Higher Level. Davis is very long and crafty with the ball in his hands. He’s a good athlete who has the ability to consistently finish around the rim in traffic.
Jaylen Dillard | L.C. Bird ’17
Considered by many to be among the top three point shooting threats in Richmond, Jaylen Dillard has made the switch to L.C. Bird from Clover Hill. Dillard’s addition to Bird gives them significant depth in the back court, and makes them a favorite to return to VCU this March.
Alex Fitch | William Byrd ’19
We’ve seen Alex Fitch on a number of occasions within the last six months, and there aren’t too many players in the entire state of Virginia who we’ve seen shoot it with his level of accuracy. The 6-foot-4 native of Roanoke is an absolute sniper from three point range, and has the ability to get hot in a hurry.
Isaiah Todd | John Marshall ’20
Despite having yet to step foot onto the floor during a high school basketball game, Isaiah Todd has already fielded a handful of scholarship offers from schools such as Baylor, Wake Forest, Miami, and most recently Virginia. The lanky, 6-foot-9 wing is highly skilled and very athletic. Todd’s ceiling is extremely high.
