Rising Stars
The black team was dominant from start to finish, at one point holding a 30point lead. The red team pulled within 10 in the final minutes, but was out matched.
MVP:
Tyrone Washington– Tyrone controlled the game, scoring when he wanted, setting up teammates at other times. There was nobody who could guard him, as he bullied past smaller guards, and danced on bigger defenders before bombing deep three pointers. Led the black team to a dominant win.
Notable Performers:
Jackson Leyba– Jackson was able to use his speed to push the ball in transition and spark some of the big runs that the black team was able to put together. Able to play on or off the ball, he was the perfect compliment to Washington.
Dominique Newsom– The bright spot for the red team came in the form of the showman Newson. He is mentally built for big moments and relishes it. Newson hit shot after shot, while mixing in some nice moves and fancy passes that brought out reactions from the crowd.
Underclassmen
The red team led most of the game, but the black team was able to go on a run late in the second half and win a close one.
MVP:
Dalen Terry– Dalen is very streaky, but when he sees a couple of shots go through the net, he can heat up in a hurry. It was a team effort in the comeback, sparked by defense and fast break points, but Terry was able to hit big shots down the stretch.
Notable Performers:
Za-Ontay Boothman– Boothman put on a show, as he showed that he can score in bunches. He hit numerous deep threes and had playful trash talking with opponents that increased the intensity of the game.
Eric Blackwell– Blackwell plays hard on both ends, and was able to get to the rim at will in both transition and in the half court set.
Upperclassmen
This one was a back and forth game until the red team went on a run down the stretch to pull away by double digits.
MVP:
Nico Mannion– Only a freshman, this kid continues to show that he is big time. What was most impressive was seeing him struggle in the beginning with the athletic Jaden Lee guarding him, then figuring it out and taking over the game. He scored when his team needed it, he assisted when the defense focused on him, and he even made a statement defensive stop, showing that he will not back down from physicality and trash talk. Nico Mannion is special.
Notable Performers:
Jaden Lee– Jaden was very impressive, as he showed that he is capable of playing great defense. He and Mannion battled in impressive fashion, and Lee’s athleticism was on full display as he consistently assaulted the rim in transition.
Geoff Hibbitt– Being a fundamental player, sometimes showcase games can be difficult to make an impact on. However, when you play the game the right way and understand where to be when playing with elite guards, you will be productive. He controlled the glass, played impressive defense, and finished in the paint well. Hibbitt showed that he has the abilities, and the mentality, to be a contributor at the college level.
