Sam Boehne is highly talented and highly coveted by local programs at the Division II and III level. But he’s a guy who knows what he wants beyond high school and basketball isn’t at the center of it.
Boehne, the top player at The Academy of Holy Angels is forgoing the opportunity to play college basketball to pursue a degree in criminal justice in hopes of becoming a member of the U.S. Marshals Service.
“I haven’t decided yet where I’ll officially go to school but I’ve got a few options out east, down south in Texas and in Florida,” Boehne said. “It’s something I’m passionate about and look forward to pursuing. Not playing basketball wasn’t an easy decision but it’s something I’ve thought about a lot and I’m looking forward to that chapter.”
Boehne certainly isn’t done playing basketball yet — much to the chagrin of his opponents — as he’s got one more season left at Holy Angels.
On the court, it’s easy to see why Boehne was getting recruited by schools like Winona Stata, Concordia University (St. Paul) and a number of MIAC programs. At 6-foot-5, Boehne is not only skilled enough to handle the ball and pass from the mid and high posts, he’s strong enough to play inside and control the paint. He’s got a lot of natural talent, but he’s also got a motor that runs hot. He’s a strong kid who can match up with anyone.
For Holy Angels, Boehne averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds per game as a junior and with five players graduating from last year’s team, his role could increase at least in the early going.
“We’ll be young but we’ve got a lot of talented young guys,” said Boehne. “It’ll be one of those things where we might struggle early but as the season goes along we’ll get better and better and be playing our best by the end of the year.”
Boehne may not be playing basketball beyond high school but he’s a kid with a plan. Holy Angels fans will get one more year to enjoy his presence on the basketball team. After that, he might be on to even brighter things.
