Thompson took a short unofficial visit to Minnesota last weekend along with several summer teammates.
“I had a great time (at the football game) talking to my friends there McKinley Wright, Calvin Wishart, and Anthony Davis,” said Thompson who played with those players on the D1 Minnesota summer AAU program.
“We sat with each other during the game, went down on the field, and there was a tailgate with the team.”
Thompson led the D1 Minnesota 16U squad to a 47-7 record this past spring and summer and his play helped him earn a spot in several top 100 national recruiting lists.
Race also earned summer offers from Creighton, Marquette, Northern Iowa, Kansas State, Nebraska, Arizona State, Northwestern, and Iowa State. After visiting Minnesota on Thursday, Thompson went down to Ames, Iowa to visit the Cyclones and their basketball program.
“Iowa State was a blast!” said Thompson. “The coaching staff and team are very welcoming. The fans are also welcoming, it was a lot of fun.”
As far as Minnesota, where Race’s father Darrell Thompson went to school and became Minnesota’s all time leading rusher before being drafted by the Green Bay Packers, the Gophers are the first program that offered Thompson at the high major level (North Dakota was the first offer overall).
At this point Thompson doesn’t know much about the Gopher program and staff. He’s taken a couple visits for basketball and football games but Thompson and the program are still in the early stages of getting to know each other.
“Honestly I don’t know the Minnesota players at all and the only coach I know a little about is Ben Johnson,” said Thompson. “I don’t really know the Gophers.”
Expect that to change soon as Thompson is one of Minnesota’s main 2018 targets along with 2018 big Daniel Oturo from Cretin-Derham Hall.
Thompson averaged 14.3 points and 6.6 rebounds a contest last year as a sophomore for the Falcons.
