Mason scored 11.2 points per game last year as a junior for the Lightning in a four guard/wing attack. He also played with the Minnesota Warriors this off-season helping them to a memorable year.
“One of my top experiences was when we beat Dream Vision, and proceeded to make it far in the tournament,” said Mason. “My other one was after Alec (Loehr) got his concussion, we came out and played really hard and almost beat another highly ranked team.
“Other than that everyday with my teammates was a blast. I think the most important thing that made me better was going against my teammates when we practiced.
“They’re all very good players and will be successful basketball players down the road. The Dream Vision win made me better by proving that anything is possible.”
Augustana bound Jameson Bryan and Mason Carpenter are back but Sean Ryan, Connor Stevens, and Martin Mitchell have taken their double figure averages to graduation. Outside of the two of them no returning players were a part of last year’s regular rotation.
That said, there is a really nice group of young players led by Tate Machacek and a few other seniors like Brady Miller and 6-6 big Sean Thissen who saw a little time.
“I’m leading workouts with the team and I’ve been getting in the gym everyday that I can. We also have open gyms twice a week. I also plan to lift a lot more so I can get stronger.”
Mason will remember a lot of things about his junior year.
“I averaged 11.2 points and six rebounds per game,” Mason said. “I missed a few games at the end of the season due to injury, and never really got back to normal.
“My top moment was probably the game against Apple Valley at their place because I had 16 in the first half and ended the game with 25. It was my favorite moment because of the rivalry between the two teams.”
The next level is aware of Mason’s work ethic and versatile production so several schools are talking to Carpenter.
“I’ve talked to all the MIAC schools except Gustavus,” said Mason. “The ones showing the most interest are Hamline, St. Olaf, Concordia-Morehead, and Macalester. I’ve also been talking to the University of Rochester in New York.
“I’m visiting UW-Eau Claire, Concordia-Morehead in October. I’ve already visited Hamline, St. Olaf, and Macalester. I would also like to visit Carleton and Rochester.”
