Now, his little brother Jon is in a similar situation, coming off a nice summer with WOTN and considering several D3 programs for college hoops.
“The summer was great,” Jon said. “It was the most fun I’ve ever had playing basketball. Coach Nicols is a great coach, and it was an awesome group of guys to play with. This fall we have open gym twice a week, and lifting three times a week.”
As a 6-foot-6 post, Mattern feels himself improving in strength and his overall post game. The NHR staff agrees that Mattern has made nice strides, and that improvement has brought recruiting attention from MIAC, UMAC and NAIA programs.
“I’ve visited Bethel, Northwestern-St. Paul, Saint Scholastica and Bethany Lutheran,” Jon said. “I am going to visit Concordia-Moorhead soon. I have also heard from Jamestown and Viterbo.”
Jon says he “liked all the schools he visited,” but there’s no rush in his process.
“I probably won’t make a decision until after the season,” he tells NHR.
Mattern and fellow senior Trey Prince will look to improve on the 6-19 record from Chanhassen’s 2015-2016 campaign.
