Continue ReadingAlthough many view the offseason as an excruciating process that involves countless hours in the gym, gallons of sweat, and more than a few days of hard work, there are a select few players that truly enjoy the experience. They take that opportunity to perfect their craft and mold their game to the next level.
One of those players is Ann Arbor Huron’s Avery Lewis.
Over the summer, Lewis has committed himself to reaching his full potential. Whether it’s weekday or weekend, Lewis remains dedicated to perfecting his craft.
“He’s literally lived in the gym,” Ann Arbor Huron Head Coach Jay Shunnar told Prep Hoops Michigan. “For some guys, we have to track their practice hours, but for Avery, it’s not necessary because he’s literally there every time we have a practice.”
During that time, Lewis has been expanding his game. While he’s already had the physical tools to make an impact on the defensive side of the ball, he’s really made an effort to expand his offensive game and particularly, his jump shot.
“At this point, he’s arguably our best defender and has a great motor,” Lewis’ AAU coach Keith Wade told Prep Hoops Michigan. “But he’s been working on his jump shot and finishing at the hoop and is gonna have a huge year for Huron.”

Along with that growth, he’s also put on 10 to 12 pounds this summer and is now around 6-foot-6 according to Shunnar. On top of that, he’s also taken a step forward in reading defenses and perfecting his action in numerous sets, including the pick-and-roll. Notably, Lewis is now ranked No. 36 by Prep Hoops Michigan in the state’s .

Of course, that development has also earned him attention on the recruiting trail.
Not only has Lewis recently attended camps with Akron and Detroit, but he’s also been getting attention from Grand Valley, Indiana Wesleyan, Saginaw Valley, and Wayne State. Naturally, as he continues to demonstrate his skillset on the court, it’s hard not to see that list growing even further.
Expectations will be high for Lewis and Ann Arbor Huron heading into this season, but if his work effort tells anything about what’s to come, expect a big things from the 2018 prospect.
