Many of the players validated their rankings while others demonstrated that their stock might be rising. Many of the top prospects will be at the Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo this next weekend.
Top 40 Rankings – 30-26
#30 Mark Hatch 6’0 PG 2018 Mesa – Hatch does not get a lot of attention statewide; however, he is worthy of being on the top 40 list for a number of reasons. He has a solid handle, a consistent shot that is off of the dribble or the catch. He dictates the tempo of the game at a level well beyond a high school player. He plays mistake free basketball and does all of the little things that any coach would want. Hatch’s play as a sophomore was monumental to the team being able to capture the state championship. Despite the loss of a couple of key pieces, I would expect to see an even more improved Hatch who is ready to take over the reins and keep Mesa at the top.
#29 Colten Kresl 6’0 PG/SG 2017 Chaparral – Great skill and talent. Craft handle with a good change of pace and feel for the game. I really like his ability to freeze the defender and attack the rim as well as pull off of the dribble. Kresl has also improved his ability to get into the paint, draw the help side defense, and find the open man. He is playing confident and letting more and more things come to him rather than force the issue. Kresl will definitely play this game at the next level and is well deserving of appearing on the Top 40 list.
#28 Noah Baumann 6’4 SG 2017 Desert Vista (San Jose State University) – Desert Vista has a lot of talent on their roster this next season. Count Baumann in that group. Although he did not see significant action on the varsity roster last year, he demonstrated throughout club ball that he can definitely play at a high level. In fact, he played so well that San Jose State offered him and received his commitment. Baumann offers length at the 2 spot and can shoot the basketball at a high level. He does a lot of little things that impacts the game in a positive manner. Baumann should play a much bigger role for Desert Vista this next season.
#27 Bryce Fowler 6’4 SG 2017 Agua Fria – Fowler is another talented wing with good length. He is a skilled wing who has a great basketball IQ. He has a great feel for the game and puts himself as well as his teammates in a position to be successful due to his intelligence. In addition, he can shoot the basketball at an extremely high rate. As far as defense is concerned, he is an above average defender, but he does a really good job of rotating in help side and using his length to make things difficult for the opposing offensive player.
#26 Bryce Meadows 6’2 PG 2018 Aspire Academy – Meadows is one of the most talented guards in the class of 2018 and in the Top 40. He is scary off the dribble and makes defenders stay focused for the entire possession as he is able to shoot from anywhere on the court. He is more comfortable shooting off of the dribble than he is off of the catch. Moreover, he has a solid basketball IQ and creates for his teammates well. Thus, it is hard to help when he drives as he usually finds the open man. Meadows is also a taller point guard with good strength, which assists him in guarding ones and twos.
