SG Tim Finke (Champaign Central)
Finke is the top wing in the state because of his combination of athleticism, skill, and versatility. The 6’5” shooting guard has good size for the position and continues to get stronger. That was evident as July went along with how his toughness improved crashing the glass and making more plays on the interior. Elite moving without the basketball and can drill spot up threes. Quality athlete that can finish in the transition game. High-major prospect.
SF Talen Horton-Tucker (Simeon)
THT continues to prove anyone that has doubted him wrong. This kid just produces. He did it last year for Simeon as a sophomore and continued that with the Mac Irvin Fire on the grassroots circuit this summer. Continues to get in better shape which has increased his athleticism. Horton-Tucker is a versatile player that can shoot it from the perimeter, handle it, sound passer, and is a plus rebounder. Mid-major plus prospect.
SG Drew Peterson (Libertyville)
Peterson is one of the higher upside players in the class. He is a long and lanky 6’7” shooting guard that is a smooth athlete. Great ball handler that has it on a string with his ability to get where he needs to get his shot off. Likes to attack the cup with his speed in transition. Solid jump shooter and just an all-around scoring threat. Once he adds strength watch out!
SG Cardell McGee (Springfield Lanphier)
McGee had a strong debut with his new grassroots team in July. The Springfield Lanphier 2018 shooting guard showed off a versatile offensive game including a passing feel from the off guard spot. His perimeter shooting really stood out which has been considered a weakness in the past. As always he was slippery through traffic using his quickness and long strides to get in the lane for scores. Major potential defensively. Mid-major to low-major prospect.
SG Kezo Brown (Simeon)
Brown redeemed himself with a solid spring and summer with the Mac Irvin Fire after a non-existent sophomore campaign for Simeon. The lefty 6’2” shooting guard is scoring wing that likes to use his jumper. When in rhythm he can get hot pulling up from both mid-range and three. Needs to be a bit more consistent with it. Has the potential to be a high-major prospect and will have the opportunity to prove that this year for the Wolverines. Right now should be a guy that mid-major schools need to be heavily tracking.
SG Armon Brummett (Decatur MacArthur)
Brummett is a 6’3” shooting guard from Decatur MacArthur High School. The 2018 prospect is one of the best pure scorers in his class across the state. He has a strong and compact body to go along with solid athleticism. Where the junior guard is at his best is shooting it from three. Deep range on his shot as he can hit both pulling up and off the catch. Love the way he competes and his motor. Powerful finisher around the hoop and gets on the glass using his strength. Needs to be on the D1 radar in 2018.
SG Lacey Watson (Rock Island)
The Rock Island star wing continues to impress with his ability to score. When his shot is on he can be lights out as it opens up so many other avenues for him. Watson is a dominant driver with his strength and ability to finish at the rim. Exceptional rebounder for his size and position. Flashes passing skill, just usually looks to score. Shot selection is the key.
SG Justin Boyd (Whitney Young)
Boyd is a rangy wing from Whitney Young that excels shooting the basketball from the perimeter. At 6’3” he is best as a catch and shoot guy spotting up for threes on the wings where he shoots it at a good clip. Length and quickness helps him defensively where he has a chance to continue to get better and be a potential impact guy as a three and D player.
SG Darius Beane (Carbondale)
Beane is one of the premier prospects in southern Illinois. He is a smooth handling guard that plays off the ball most of the time, but his best asset might be his vision and passing. Projectable body and frame along with upside at the next level. Moves well laterally on defense and has solid form on his jump shot.
SG Javon Freeman (Whitney Young)
Freeman is a long and thin shooting guard at 6’4” with an angular frame. Made the switch over to Meanstreets in July and played well. The two guard played a lot on the ball in the games we saw him play during the spring and some of the same in the summer in July. Made nice passes in the half court showing a solid feel for the game. As a scorer he is best taking his man one on one off the bounce getting to the rim. Jumper is inconsistent although he can hit one from three on occasion. Pushes it in transition. Sleeper top 20 prospect in the class of 2018.
