Arizona Top 250 Expo: Top 10 Underclassmen
The Top 250 Expo had a lot of talent and good depth at each age group. Many underclassmen demonstrated an ability to not only play with upperclassmen, but to make an impact with upperclassmen. Here is a list of the top 10 underclassmen performers from this Saturday, September 10 at Inspire Courts.
Expo Top 10 Underclassmen
Za-Ontay Boothman 5’11 PG/SG Buckeye 2020 – Boothman is an incredible talent who has a great fill for scoring the basketball. At times, he shows his youth on the defensive end of the floor. With that said, his feel for the game, ability to shoot from anywhere on the court, and his craftiness in the paint gives him a very high ceiling going forward.
BJ Bryant 6’4 SG NFL Yet 2019 – Tremendous athlete and a great build despite his age. He is tough om the glass and can create for himself at any time due to his physical presence. In addition, he has a consistent mid-range jumper and shoots the basketball at a good level from the 3 as well. All of his skills were on display at the Top 250 Expo as well. Bryant is a top tier player in this class who has a very bright future ahead of him.
Xavier Dussell 6’3 SG Mesquite 2020 – One of the top shooters in the state and good length. He also demonstrated a little more aggressiveness on the offensive end than he typically does. At times, he can be passive if the play does not directly affect his man on the defensive end. For instance, he is a good rebounder if the guy he is guarding crashes the glass; however, if his guy does not make the effort, he will not get involved in the play. He has as much potential as any player in this entire class.
Dominic Gonzalez 6’2 PG/SG Ironwood 2020 – Good length and a confident shooter from deep. He did not shoot the basketball as well as he is capable, but he displayed a smooth and quick stroke. He is extremely aggressive for a freshman and does not lack confidence in himself. He matched up with some of the top talent on the defensive end of the floor, and he was great on the glass on the offensive and defensive end.
Andre Harris 6’6 PF/C Red Mountain 2019 – Harris is a tremendous talent. He has a large frame, good footwork, a soft touch around the rim, and a good basketball IQ while on the block. He demonstrated some guard skills at the Expo as well. At times, he tried to do too much off the dribble and got himself into trouble or ended up taking a difficult shot. As he improves his decision making from the guard spot, his stock will rise considerably as he will be quite versatile.
Kade Maddock PF 6’6 Canyon View Prep 2019 – Maddock has a really good motor. He rarely takes plays off and keeps at a high level despite being relatively new to the game. His jump shot has improved since the last time I saw him play. His length assists him greatly and he is figuring out how to use it more and more every time I watch him play. Keep an eye on this young and maturing prospect.
Trask Morgan SG 6’4 Mountain Ridge 2019 – One of the top shooters in this class. He has good length at the shooting guard spot for only being a sophomore. In addition, it is prevalent that he has played this game for a long time as he has a high basketball IQ. He moves without the basketball well as a means of creating opportunities for himself to score.
Nathan Perry PG 5’9 Paradise Valley 2019 – Solid handle and good lateral quickness as well as speed. Plays with consistency and fundamentally sound. He makes fun mistakes and plays the pass first point guard role well.
Khalid Price PG 5’9 Mountain Pointe 2019 – Good shooter, solid quickness, and smart player. Dictates the tempo of the game well and can get after the opposing guards due to his speed and intelligence. Sees the floor well and creates for himself and others at a high rate for being an up and coming prospect. As his body matures, his stock could rise significantly due to his skill set.
Anthony Rosier PG 6’1 Boulder Creek 2020 – Good work ethic and effort. He has a good enough handle to play at the point, but he is capable of playing the two guard as well due to his ability to shoot the basketball from deep and attack the rim. Also, despite his age, he does a good job of stopping the basketball and playing position defense. As he grows and matures, he will continue to excel on the defensive end.
Trentez Scales 5’6 PG Ironwood 2020 – One of the fastest prospects at the expo. Scales his a strong shooter from deep who possesses a good handle. He has a good understanding of the game, but he gets caught in bad situations at times due to his speed. Defensively, he is capable of guarding almost the length of the floor and absolutely harasses the opposing offensive player. Scales has a bright future at Ironwood and after high school.
