The lists compiled will be organized based on year and position, and will only include players that have open recruitments and have yet to make a verbal commitment. It’s impossible for us to mention every kid that boosted their stock throughout the summer, but we’ve narrowed down some of the players that took the biggest jumps in improvement and interest from colleges. Here’s part one of the 2019 point guards.
Anthony Harris | 6’2” | Paul VI/Team Takeover 16U
New Offers: UCF, George Mason, ODU, Virginia Tech
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #3
Harris played a big role in PVI’s trip back to the state championship game as just a freshman, and this summer he showed it was no fluke as he played up with Team Takeover’s 16U EYBL team and was nothing short of solid. The lightning quick lead guard showed great feel in keeping a very talented roster happy, and he showed that he belonged with his toughness and ability to score it from all over the floor. He’s a two way player that can take over a game when needed, and his recruitment shows that college programs think he’s a sure thing moving forward.
Jay Heath | 6’3” | Bishop O’Connell/Team Durant
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #5
Playing with one of the most talented backcourts on the east coast with Judah Jordan and Jonathan McGriff, Heath was a consistent impact player all summer even if heads were turning elsewhere. He isn’t as flashy as McGriff or have the unreal natural talent Jordan has, but Heath is a heady PG that locks up, makes the right play and provides energy with his play. He’ll split time with rising junior Xavier Johnson at Bishop O’Connell, and the two will have a lot of the ball handling and distributing responsibilities on them in the WCAC this season.
Chase Coleman | 5’10” | Maury/Boo Williams 16U
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #10
Everyone knows about his pedigree coming from a great basketball family, but when the ball is in play Coleman shows that he’s more than just Matt Coleman’s brother, he’s an intelligent lead guard that puts his team in winning situations. After being called up to 16U after the first weekend, Coleman eventually found his way into the starting lineup and starred immediately. He may not have the size of Matt, but he’s a better shooter, has the same competitive fire and has an IQ well beyond his years. Looks like the Coleman family will have a lot of the same colleges knocking on their door if Chase grows like his brother did.
Levar Allen | 5’10” | John Marshall/Team Loaded VA
New Offers: Winthrop, La Salle, JMU
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #15
He was thrust into the starting PG role at John Marshall, and at times he was inconsistent and played like a freshman. However, playing with kids his own age this summer Allen showed that he’s above the competition with his strength and finishing ability in downhill scenarios. He has good feel, blow by ability and can score it in bunches when you play him to pass. He needs to work on shedding some baby fat, but he was one of the most consistent PGs in the 2019 class all summer.
Antonio Bridy | 6’0” | Life Christian Academy/Boo Williams
New Offers: UMES
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #16
Bridy showed tremendous potential in his freshman season with LCA, and he continued that process over the summer with Boo Williams where he had the ball in his hands for most of the time on the floor. He has a mix of natural talent and understanding of the game, which is easy to see when you watch the way he changes pace and gets in the lane to create for himself and his teammates. As he continues to mature and fills out his frame, Bridy has the chance to climb the rankings and recruiting boards as a dual threat combo guard.
Evan Buckley | 5’11” | Stone Bridge/Team Loaded VA
New Offers: American
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #17
He isn’t the biggest, fastest or most flashy point guard on this list, but Buckley has that natural feel that every coach wants out of his floor general. He makes the right pass, whether it’s pitching it up in transition for an easy lay up or getting in the lane and kicking with his left hand to his shooters. He’s a quiet leader that shows toughness on both ends, can score it from anywhere on the floor and can be trusted with the ball in his hands late in the game. He’ll continue to improve athletically and will be touted by a number of programs looking for a winning point guard.
