Vantage Hoops was in the gym to catch the action throughout the week. Below, we run down a scouting report of a few standouts from the class of 2017.
PG Elijah Landrum | MOKAN Elite
Eli Landrum was very steady and reliable on both ends of the floor for MOKAN Elite. The strong, skilled point guard was crafty off the dribble, and demonstrated the ability to make shots from the perimeter. Landrum’s bread and butter came defensively, where he actively read and reacted to the passing lanes, causing several deflections and steals.
C Marcus Littles | Team Final
A big-bodied, strong post player who knows how to carve out space on the low block, Marcus Littles was an impactful post presence in the paint for Team Final. Littles has very good hands, and rebounds consistently out of his area. He makes strong rim runs, sets hard screens, and easily absorbs contact when finishing around the rim.
PG Chris Lykes | Team Takeover
With a 32-point performance in Team Takeover’s narrow opening round defeat at The Ei8ht, Chris Lykes once again proved that no stage is too big for him. The explosive speed merchant was nearly impossible to contain off the bounce. Lykes played with a consistent, tireless motor and showcased his playmaking ability at the lead guard spot.
SG JP Moorman | Team CP3
Relentless. Athletic. Versatile. Those are a few of the words that come to mind when describing JP Moorman of Team CP3. Moorman was exceptional on the defensive end, using his length and instincts to consistently create turnovers. Moorman displayed big time athleticism as a rebounder along with his ability to play above the rim on both ends of the court.
G Darryl Morsell | Team Melo
Darryl Morsell continued to build off the terrific momentum he created this summer with a series of fantastic performances for Team Melo in Vegas. The energetic guard plays with a tremendous amount of poise, and consistently made plays for himself and his teammates. Morsell quite clearly cemented his place among the top players in the country this summer.
F Nana Opoku | Team Loaded VA
The development of Nana Opoku within the last 6 to 8 months has been outstanding. Opoku continues to fill out his long frame, and impress by flashing signs of his underrated skill and touch on the offensive end. Opoku’s biggest impact, however, comes defensively, where he is most effective blocking shots and controlling the boards.
G Chris Orlina | Team Melo
Chris Orlina consistently showcased his ability to score the basketball from a number of areas for Team Melo. Orlina’s length, athleticism, and skill enable him to slash into the paint where he finished with touch and strength through contact. Orlina’s defensive potential is very good, given his ability to rebound out of his position and effectively use his length to defend on the perimeter.
F De’Vondre Perry | Team Melo
The super competitive 6-foot-7 wing De’Vondre Perry played arguably his best game of the week during Team Melo’s ESPN matchup with MOKAN Elite. Perry, who recorded 24 points and 8 boards in the contest, proved that he has the tools to compete at the highest level.
F Andre Rafus | Team Melo
6-foot-9 lefty Andre Rafus was a big time spark plug for Team Melo. Rafus’ ability to consistently put the ball in the basket was an integral part of his team’s success. As a result of his length and athleticism, Rafus showed that he can defend multiple positions in college.
