Things are going well for Justin Engg. A big part of Justin having a strong July was ECI having a strong July turning a rough April start into a 20 win season by the time they walked off the floor for the final time in Sioux Falls a couple weeks back.
“My top experiences would have been getting out of North Dakota and seeing what other talent and competition is out there,” said Engg in terms of playing with ECI. “For a single experience I would say when we were 16u and made it to the final four in the Sanford Series, that was a top moment.”
Engg is looking to take his game to another level and there are certain things about AAU basketball that allowed Justin to do that.
“AAU made me a better basketball player by getting me used to a faster paced game style,” Engg explained. “It made me be able to not get too ahead of myself during games and relax more in the up-tempo setting.”
Minot has a state championship to defend, again. Justin started every game for the Magic averaging 10.9 points and 5.2 boards a contest. What does the team have to do to three-peat?
“By getting in the gym a lot to do workouts as a team, that’s how we will improve,” said Engg. “By playing together as much as we can and getting used to others that we may not have played much with in the past. To try and build some chemistry together.”
Engg will also play college basketball in the future. He has offers from Minot State, U of Mary, and Jamestown and they are one of four main options he’s considering.
“Right now it’s U Mary, Minot State, Jamestown, and St. John’,” Engg told PHD. “It felt great to receive scholarship offers. It was kind of a relief knowing that schools are beginning to picture me being a part of their program. It’s nice going into my senior year knowing I have the chance to extend my basketball career past high school.
“I’ve talked to U Mary and Minot State and plan to have a visit sometime this fall when school and their workouts start. I may be going to Jamestown within the upcoming weeks to check it out and am currently talking to St. John’s about the possibility of me going there for one.”
St. John’s is one of the top MIAC schools in Minnesota’s division three level of basketball.
