The 30 games of basketball experience was great for JP, but so was the off the court time with his teammates from South Dakota and Iowa.
“I think my top experiences with playing AAU had to include playing against some of the top teams in the Midwest and beyond and showing people that a team from South Dakota can compete and that there’s some really good, skilled players from South Dakota,” said JP.
“While playing was obviously what AAU is all about, it was also a ton of fun just to spend time with my teammates hanging out playing NBA2k in the room and messing around between games. As far as how AAU made me better as a player I think that it was great just to go up against the better athletes that I don’t see as much during school ball and really be challenged to play at a faster level.”
Now the new focus is Sioux Falls O’Gorman and collecting the end of the season goal that the Knights want so badly. The talent seems to be there for a strong run this winter. JP is a leader of the group, so how does he play to lead?
“Being a senior I want to lead by example so that I can hold the rest of the team accountable for their fall training whether that be just being getting shots up at open gym in the mornings before school or in the weight room after school,” JP said.
“This fall I want to focus on continuing to improve my quickness and ball handling so that I will feel completely comfortable playing both on the perimeter and inside this winter. Another thing I really want to accomplish is to gain another 15 or so pounds before the season starts.”
Costello collected a lot of interest in the past four months and there are three schools calling the most.
“During July and August I’ve heard from about 12 schools,” Costello said. “Out of those I would say that the University of Chicago (a top academic D3), Carleton (a top academic D3 in Minnesota), and Dakota State have been the ones that have shown the most interest in me.
“I want to double major in Biology and Economics and eventually become an Orthopedic Surgeon. Wherever I end up going I want to make sure that they have a great science department that will help prepare for medical school.”
Costello has visits planned for the upcoming months.
“I’m going to visit the University of Chicago in September once schools starts and then I’m talking to Northwestern, Carleton, and School of Mines about setting up visits for this fall but don’t have any planned with them yet.”
